NATCHEZ — Four football teams will finally get the chance to dress out in their uniforms and start hitting people they do not see every day at practice this evening at Tom F. Williams Memorial Stadium on the campus of Natchez High School.
The Bulldogs will host their 2011 football jamboree tonight. Natchez will take on Hazlehurst in a half-game at 7:45 p.m. That game will follow Wilkinson County High School taking on J.J. McClain High School from Lexington at 6:45 p.m.
A third game was scheduled to be played after Natchez’s game but Amite County cancelled, and Jefferson County was left without an opponent, Natchez coach Lance Reed said.
“To be honest, I’m not sure what we have done to make up for that,” he said. “In my mind Jefferson County might not even be playing (tonight). We’re looking for someone, but this late I’m pretty sure we’re not going to find someone.”
Reed said tonight will be a chance to iron out some of the kinks in the Bulldogs’ armor before the regular season starts.
“We are looking for good football to start the year,” he said. “We know mistakes will be made, but we will use it as a teaching tool to go out and get prepared to play Wilkinson County (Aug. 19).”
Reed said he still expects his team to play sharp.
“We expect to see them perform the way we’ve been performing in practice, and we want them to play with great effort,” he said. “I’m sure we will make mistakes, but we will come back Saturday morning and watch film and correct those mistakes.”
Reed said Wilkinson County and Natchez would have the opportunity to get a look at what each other has to offer before they face off in week one.
“It’s a chance for all of us to come together, and get our seasons kicked off,” he said. “But I’m sure we’ll peek at each other a little bit.”
Reed said his players are excited about getting on the field and seeing what they can do.
