ACCS goes two-and-out in tournament

LIBERTY — Adams County Christian School had a rough day at the Amite School Center Tournament Saturday afternoon, going two-and-out on a day when several of the Lady Rebels’ starters were out.

ACCS had an 8-2 lead over Oak Forest Academy going into the bottom of the third inning before the Lady Yellow Jackets rallied for a 9-8 win in four innings.

Oak Forest scored six runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 8-8 and send the game into an extra inning with the international tiebreaker rule in use. ACCS was unable to score in the top of the fourth and Oak Forest won the game in the bottom of the fourth.

“We should’ve won the first game. We had a couple of base-running snafus or we wouldn’t have had to go to the international tiebreaker. But that’s a learning experience,” Lady Rebels head coach Forrest Foster said.

Tory Laird went 2-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run and Brooke Runnels also hit an inside-the-park home run. Foster added that the fences in the outfield go close to 300 feet — meaning hitting a fly ball for a regular home run is virtually impossible.

In the second game, the Lady Rebels took on MAIS District 5-AA opponent Columbia Academy in a non-district game. And the Lady Cougars used a couple of four-run innings to come away with a 10-2 win in four innings.

Even though ACCS was without several of its starters, Foster said he was pleased with how many of the younger and less experienced players did in its two games. And despite being charged with the loss in both games, Abby Givens gave up just six hits in each game.

“The younger girls did really well,” he said. “Abby did a good job pitching. She’s coming around. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”

ACCS (4-7) returns to action on Tuesday when it takes on District 5-AA rival Trinity Episcopal at the Natchez-Adams Girls Softball Complex. The junior varsity game starts at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the varsity game at 7:15 p.m.

No results, including scores, were available from Wilkinson County Christian Academy on its games.

Franklin County goes 2-0 at McComb Classic

MCCOMB — The Franklin County Lady Bulldogs’ slow-pitch softball team won both of its games Saturday afternoon at the McComb Classic, first getting past Bogue Chitto 5-2 and then shutting out West Lincoln 5-0.

Franklin County head coach Dana Smith said she was glad that the game against Bogue Chitto went only seven innings. Last year when these two teams played against each other at the McComb Classic, the game went 11 innings.

“Overall, we played well,” Smith said. “Bogue Chitto and West Lincoln have always had good teams.”

The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Bobcats of Bogue Chitto despite being out-hit 14-10. That’s because only two of those 14 hits went for extra bases — a double each by Adrienne Wallace and Regan Welch.

Bogue Chitto took a 2-1 lead after three innings of play, but Franklin County tied it up at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning. Two innings later, the Lady Bulldogs took the lead for good by scoring three runs.

KeKe Collins went 3-for-3 with two doubles while winning pitcher Mildred Starks and Lay Lay Griffin each were 2-for-3 with a double. Bogue Chitto was led by Adrienne Wallace and Regan Welch, who each went 2-for-3 with a double.

Against West Lincoln, Franklin County scored all of its runs in the first three innings — two in the top of the first, one in the top of the second and two in the top of the third.

That was all the run support Starks needed as she pitched a complete-game shutout. All of the Lady Bears’ hits went for singles and the defense behind Starks was solid with just one error.

“Defensively, I was proud of them. They looked good. Offensively, we went in spurts. We’re going to improve on that,” Smith said. “Mildred did excellent. She’s pitched four games (two jamboree games and two regular-season games) and she’s had just one walk.”

Franklin County (2-0) hosts Lawrence County on Tuesday with the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 7 p.m.
