FERRIDAY — Services for Opal Irene Smedley, 88, of Ferriday, who died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, in Ferriday, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Young’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Cullum officiating.

Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smedley was born July 24, 1923, in Clarksville, Texas, the daughter of Oren Stiles Brooks and Naomi Opal Brooks.

Mrs. Smedley was a former manager for Dollar General store and was a member of United Methodist Church in Avery, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Smedley; her parents; one daughter, Jeanie Carroll; and two brothers, Bob Brooks and Buster Brooks.

Survivors include one daughter, June Hines and husband, Jim, of Paris, Texas; one son, Edwin Carroll of Ferriday; one stepson, Billy Smedley of Ferriday; three stepdaughters, Dorothy Gillespie of Winnsboro, La., Brenda Tarver and husband, Wayne, of Ferriday and Bobbie Tucker of Olla, La.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Edwin Carroll, Michael Ennis, Raymond Lemoine, Chris Carroll, Cody Phelps and Wayne Phelps.
