NATCHEZ — When Brookhaven Academy tallied four runs in the top of the first inning to start its District 5-AA contest against Adams County Christian School, ACCS head coach Forrest Foster told his team it was just the beginning of the roller-coaster that would lead his Lady Rebels to their first district win of the season.
“I knew it was going to be a battle,” Foster said. “When they scored four in the first I (told the girls), ‘this is going to be a slugfest. It’s going to be who’s going to hit the ball that wins.’ And everybody on the team made a spectacular play tonight.”
Foster was right about the game being a “slugfest”, and the Lady Rebels were able to outslug Brookhaven to grab a 14-9 win.
ACCS answered Brookhaven’s first inning flurry with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first to bring the score to 4-2.
That score would stand until the bottom of the third when the Lady Rebels got hot at the plate and scored eight runs on four hits, including a bases-loaded triple by Abby Givens. Catcher Tory Laird added two hits in the inning, as the Lady Rebels sent 12 batters to the plate.
Franklin County (8-3) returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Bogue Chitto. The junior varsity is at 5 p.m. and will be followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m.
Columbia Academy 7, Trinity Episcopal 5
COLUMBIA — Jordan McNabb kept Trinity Episcopal off balance for four of the five innings she was on the mound and got plenty of run support in the first inning as the Columbia Academy Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Saints Tuesday afternoon.
Trinity head coach Chris Hutchins was unable to be at the game because of work obligations and assistant coach Chad Huber was head coach for the day in this MAIS District 5-AA game.
After the Lady Saints scored one run in the top of the first inning, the Lady Cougars took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. Columbia Academy added another run to go ahead 5-1 before Trinity rallied late.
The Lady Saints scored three runs in the top of the fourth and one run in the top of the fifth to make it a 5-5 game. But the Lady Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth before time ran out.
Mallory Lancaster went 2-for-3 with a double and Ashleigh Williams was 2-for-2 to lead Trinity at the plate. McNabb was the winning pitcher for Columbia Academy and had a double while Laken Morris, Katelyn Martin and Alex Anthony each went 2-for-3.
Trinity Episcopal (6-8, 1-3) plays at Adams County Christian School in a key District 5-AA game next Tuesday with the JV game at 4 p.m. and the varsity game at 6:15 p.m.
Centreville 3, Silliman 2 (8 innings)
CENTREVILLE — Ariana Bigner’s sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning brought in Katie Berry with the game-winning run as the Centreville Academy Lady Tigers got a huge win over the Silliman Institute Lady Wildcats Tuesday night.
With the international tiebreaker in use in extra innings, Berry started at second base and moved to third on a well-place sacrifice bunt by Renee Miley before Bigner more than helped her own cause with the RBI sacrifice fly that won the ball game.
Centreville’s win over Silliman was big in more than one way. The Lady Tigers moved back into postseason contention as they improved to 4-2 in MAIS District 6-AA. It was also their first win over the Lady Wildcats in three years.
“For our seniors and juniors, it was a big win for them. I’m proud of this group,” Centreville head coach Mark Mann said. “I tell them, ‘It’s hard to beat a team that won’t quit’. We’ve lost a lot of close games the last few years. They won’t quit this year and that’s where we’re at.”
Silliman scored one run in the top of the first inning and that appeared to be all the run support Lady Wildcats pitcher Kayla Davidson would need. They added another run on a Taylor LeBlanc solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to go ahead 2-0.
To her credit, Bigner kept the Lady Tigers in the game until their offense finally showed up.
“Bigner has been rock solid all year. She was outstanding. She didn’t have her best stuff, but she battled,” Mann said. “Her temperament, she doesn’t rattle real easy. She hung in there without us getting any runs until the sixth.”
Bigner allowed just three hits, struck out six and walked two batters in a complete-game performance to pick up the win.
Meanwhile, Davidson kept mowing down Centreville batters and kept the Lady Tigers scoreless in the first five innings. But it was in the bottom of the sixth when Centreville started its comeback.
Even though Davidson was the losing pitcher, she struck out 12 batters, allowed six hits and walked only one batter in seven and two-thirds innings.
The Lady Tigers scored one run in that frame and sent the game into extra innings by scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh with the game tied at 2-2.
“Centreville (18-11, 4-2) hosts Central Private in District 6-AA action next Tuesday with the JV game at 6 p.m. and the varsity game at 7:15 p.m.
