TYLERTOWN — Caleb Upton had another strong performance for Cathedral High School as the Green Wave won convincingly at Salem 42-24 Friday night.
Upton was 18 of 30 in passing for 277 yards and three touchdown passes on the night.
“He started off 0-for-3 and then he caught fire,” Cathedral head coach Ron Rushing said. “The offensive line gave him all day, and he lit them up.”
Rushing also said he was pleased how his team avoided lackadaisical play after last week’s big win against Stringer High School.
“I was pleased with the way we played,” Rushing said. “I thought we might have a letdown. We were mentally ready to play.
“We got up 35-8 in the third quarter and started playing some younger kids. Overall, I was pleased.”
Jadarius Ealey scored first for the Green Wave on a 2-yard run with 5:52 left in the first quarter. Later in the first, Carl Hammitte caught an 18-yard touchdown pass to put Cathedral up 14-0 after one.
In the second quarter, Salem’s David Carr had a 6-yard touchdown run to cut the Cathedral lead to 14-7. But the Green Wave’s Tyler Flemming scored two unanswered touchdowns before intermission to make it 28-7. Flemming had a 56-yard interception return, as well as a 21-yard touchdown reception.
In the third quarter, Ealey put Cathedral ahead 35-7 on a 15-yard run with 10:28 left. Salem scored on a Cameron Robinson 3-yard run with 33 seconds left in the third.
Daniel Huffines tallied a 48-yard touchdown catch with 8:22 left in the fourth. Salem scored the final touchdown of the night on an Austin Fazande 69-yard pass from Ke’undrae Williams with 3:24 left in regulation.
Ealey led the Green Wave in rushing with 56 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns. Daniel Huffines continued to be Upton’s go-to guy at receiver, pulling in nine catches for 170 yards and a touchdown.
Matthew Rymer finished with 11 solo tackles and nine assists on defense, and Josh Callaway had nine solo tackles, seven assists and two tackles for a loss.
Cathedral rose to 5-0 on the season, 3-0 in MHSAA Region 4-1A. It will host archrival St. Aloysius next Friday.
