Julie Cooper/The Natchez Democrat — The moon says goodbye Friday morning as the Great Mississippi River Balloon Race of 2011 says hello.

VIDALIA — Hot-air balloons lifted off at the Natchez Cemetery Friday morning, crossing the Mississippi River and flying into Concordia Parish.

The flight lasted nearly an hour.

Balloons picked their way through patchy, yet thick, fog in much of Concordia Parish, ultimately landing in a field not far from Louisiana 131 and the Mississippi River. Several balloons were carrying bicyclists who, upon landing, hopped on bikes and raced to the Natchez Visitor Reception Center.
