Prep roundups: After slow start, ACCS pulls away

NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School got of to a somewhat slow start and then turned a close game into a blowout as the Lady Rebels routed the Tensas Academy Lady Chiefs 72-19 Tuesday night at the ACCS Tip-Off Tournament.
Despite having trouble getting into a rhythm in the opening minutes of its season-opener, ACCS led Tensas Academy 17-7 by the end of the first quarter. The second quarter proved to the turning point as the Lady Rebels outscored the Lady Chiefs 23-9 to take a commanding 40-16 lead into halftime.
“To God be the glory. I thought our girls complimented each other very well,” Lady Rebels head coach Melanie Hall said. “We came out sluggish at first. But sometimes when you have that kind of competition, you do that. And then we got into a little flow.”
In the second half, the Lady Rebels dominated the Lady Chiefs on both ends of the court. ACCS scored a combined 32 points over the final two quarters while Tensas Academy managed a total of three points after halftime.
“I was pleased with their conditioning factor. Everybody contributed,” Hall said.
Tori Laird had a game-high 20 points to lead ACCS while Brandis White scored 14 points and Abby Givens finished with 13 points. Hali Matthews led Tensas Academy with 10 points.
Tensas Academy (0-1) takes on Silliman Institute today at 3:15 p.m. ACCS (1-0) will take on Central Private Thursday at 5:45 p.m.
Monterey girls 55, Sicily Island 34
MONTEREY, La. — The Monterey Lady Wolves rebounded from its loss to Brookhaven Academy at the ACCS Tip-Off Tournament with a resounding win over the Sicily Island Lady Tigers in their home opener Tuesday night.
Monterey had its way with Sicily Island for the first three quarters. The Lady Wolves jumped out to a 22-3 lead over the Lady Tigers at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.
Ellen Bairnsfather led Monterey (1-1) with a game-high 13 points and Karlee Woodruff had 11 points. The Lady Wolves host Georgetown for homecoming on Friday night.
Sicily Island boys 55, Monterey 47
MONTEREY, La. — The Monterey Wolves were victimized at the free-throw line and that proved to be the difference as they lost a tough one in their season-opener to the Sicily Island Tigers Tuesday night.
“I thought we played extremely hard. We missed 16 free throws in the game,” Monterey head coach Eric Richard said. “We’ve got to be able to execute on offense better and at the free-throw line.”
Monterey cut Sicily Island’s lead to one point early in the fourth quarter, but was never able to take the lead and the Tigers pulled away late to preserve the win.
Monterey (0-1) will look for its first win of the season when it hosts Georgetown Friday night for homecoming.
