WCCA to host Riverfield

woodville — The Wilkinson County Christian Academy football team has not had many tough games this season.

The Rams only loss came at the hands of one of the top teams in MAIS Class AA, and they won all but one of their MAIS-A games by at least 18 points.

But this week WCCA will face the only MAIS Class A team that gave them trouble this season when the Rams host Riverfield Academy in the second round of the playoffs.

WCCA defeated Riverfield in a 3-0 defensive struggle at Riverfield on Sept. 19, and Rams’ head coach Ray McDaniel said the Raiders would definitely present a challenge.

“Riverfield has a good football team,” he said. “They are 9-3, but they lost to a couple of bigger schools. They are big, physical and have a few kids that can run.”

WCCA made it to the second round by defeating Park Place Christian Academy 49-0 last week. McDaniel said that win generated a lot of excitement around the Rams’ football team.

“It was big,” he said. “It built a lot of excitement at the school and in the community. It had been since I think 1988 since we won a playoff game. We hope to have a big crowd (this week).”

McDaniel said a win this week would just build upon the excitement in Woodville, but a win will not come easy.

“It would give the kids a lot of confidence if we can pull out a win against them,” he said. “It would make (the excitement) go even higher if it’s possible. But we know what happened in the first game, and they are going to come and give us their best game.”

McDaniel said the Rams are focused on perfecting their play this week.

“We are just going to play hard and do what we do,” he said. “We are trying to get everything sharp and cleaned up on offense, defense and special teams.”

As always, turnovers will play a key role in the matchup, McDaniel said.

“We have to take care of the football,” he said. “We can have no turnovers, and we can’t make mental mistakes.”

WCCA (11-1) will host Riverfield (9-3) at 7 p.m. Friday.
