Lady Bulldogs use big comeback to top McComb

BROOKHAVEN — The first half of Tuesday afternoon’s game between Natchez High and McComb was dominated by the Lady Tigers as they played like one of the top teams in the state.

McComb was ranked No. 5 in the Clarion-Ledger’s preseason Class 5A poll. And the way the Lady Tigers played against the Lady Bulldogs in the game’s first 16 minutes, it appeared they were on their way to another easy win.

But Natchez High had a lot to say about that. Led by Ashley Minor, Keyana Miller and a ferocious defense, the Lady Bulldogs rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to upset the Lady Tigers 52-49 at the Brookhaven High School Tournament.

Natchez High struggled to get any kind of rhythm going against McComb’s defense when it had the ball in the first half. And that allowed the Lady Tigers to take a 14-9 lead after one quarter of play and a 29-15 lead at halftime.

But whatever Lady Bulldogs head coach Sue Johnson said to her players at the half worked as they came out fired up. And the Lady Tigers were in trouble.

Natchez High outscored McComb 15-10 to cut its lead to nine points at the end of the third quarter. And the Lady Bulldogs kept it going in the fourth quarter by putting up 22 points while holding the Lady Tigers to 10 points.

Minor led all scorers with 24 points while Miller finished with 13 points. The Lady Bulldogs shut down Alexis Johnson and Angela Earl in the process. Johnson led McComb with 11 points while Earl was held to just nine points.

Natchez High (5-1) doesn’t play again in the tournament until Saturday when it takes on West Lincoln at 1 p.m.

ACCS 63, Centreville 25

CLINTON, La. — Tori Laird scored almost as many points by herself as Centreville Academy did as a team. Laird finished with a game-high 23 points to lead the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels past the Lady Tigers Tuesday afternoon at the Silliman Shootout Tournament.

ACCS head coach Melanie Hall said her team played better against Centreville than it did in a blowout home win over Amite School Center Monday night.

“The more they play together, they just bring out the best in each other. Each player has something to bring to the team,” Hall said. “When they bring it together, it’s just fun to watch. And I’m just thankful to be part of it.”

This game was over long before halftime arrived. ACCS jumped out to an 11-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and when the second quarter was done, the Lady Rebels had a commanding 26-9 lead. And they continued to add to their lead in the second half.

Brandis White scored 13 points and Abby Givens had 10 points for the Lady Rebels. The Lady Tigers were led by Renee Miley and Tori Rouse with eight points each.

ACCS (6-0) will take on tournament host Silliman Thursday at 4 p.m.

The Lady Tigers took a 19-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and then jumped out to a 34-18 lead at the half. And it wasn’t any better for the Lady Chiefs in the second half.
