Natchez — A Natchez High School senior is in the hospital after suffering a broken collarbone and a fractured knee when her car was hit by a logging truck Friday afternoon.

Ciara Smith was turning left onto D’Evereux Drive from Seargent S. Prentiss Drive when an 18-wheeler logging truck smashed into her 2009 Honda Accord at approximately 1 p.m.

Smith’s mother, Angela Reynolds, said her daughter was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center after being transported by ambulance to Natchez Regional Medical Center from the scene of the accident.

Reynolds said in addition to the broken collarbone and fractured right knee, Smith has torn ligaments in her left knee. She said Smith’s head and neck scans show no head trauma, but a trauma team has been called in to make sure Smith has no internal injuries.

Reynolds said Smith is scheduled for more tests on her knees today.

Stone said witnesses on the scene said both drivers had green signal lights. He said police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Reynolds said Smith, who qualifies for early dismissal at school, was on the way to the bank to cash her paycheck when the accident happened. Smith works at Heidelberg Law Office.

Smith was crowned as Natchez High School’s homecoming queen in September. She is vice president of the school’s National Honor Society, as well as member of student council and the National Beta Club.

Sonya Gooden, left, and Maleiah Dixon watch as Smith is removed from her vehicle.

Reynolds said Smith was scheduled to travel to Florida at the end of this month for a cheerleading performance, but she’ll have to miss the trip because of her injuries.

“We are just thanking God,” Reynolds said. “We are just so blessed that she is alive and on the road to recovery.”
