Wesson tops Cathedral

NATCHEZ — Wesson High School’s fast-pace style of play seemed to be too much for the Cathedral High School girls Tuesday night.
Cathedral fell to 0-8 on the season in a 47-34 loss to the Lady Cobras, head coach Randy Smith said turnovers were the main culprit in the Lady Green Wave coming out on the short end.
“Turnovers were our worst enemy,” Smith said. “We played too fast and needed to slow it down. You try to tell them to take a deep breath and look up the court to pass, but they’re young girls. They’re excitable. (Wesson) had seven seniors, and that was the difference.”
Specifically, Smith said he played 10 girls, six of whom were freshman, and one of whom was an eighth grader. Despite the results on the scoreboard, Smith said there were some bright spots.
“Our big girl (Wesley Calloway) played better than she ever has, and Kimble (Devening) played well,” Smith said. “Ginny (Daggett) gave us outstanding effort and helped keep us in hit.”
Calloway finished with 11 points, while Daggett led the Lady Green Wave with 13, six of which came in the fourth quarter. But the Lady Green Wave had no answer for Wesson’s Dylann Harris, who led the game in scoring with 19 points.
“She had a lot of speed, and she shot pretty well from the outside. I think she had a twin sister,” Smith joked.
The game remained close in the first several minutes of play, as Cathedral jumped out to an early 3-0 lead off a free throw by Daggett and a field goal by Calloway. Wesson finally got on the board at the 5:22 mark when Maura Smith hit a two-pointer.
Cathedral was outscored 8-1 in the final five minutes of play, and its only point during that stretch was on a foul shot by Daggett.
After falling behind 10-4 in the first, Cathedral began to crawl back in the second, with Calloway scoring five points for the Lady Green Wave early in the second and Daggett adding two free throws with 4:31 to go before the half.
The Lady Cobras scored just four points in the first four minutes of the second, but Wesson outscored Cathedral 9-4 in the final four minutes of the second to take a 23-15 lead at intermission.
Cathedral’s offense struggled to score in the third quarter, totaling just six points, while Harris took over for Wesson, scoring nine of the Lady Cobra’s 12 points of the period to take a 35-21 lead into the fourth quarter.
A strong push by Daggett late in the fourth quarter was not enough to mount a comeback, as the Lady Green Wave scored just one point in the final two minutes of play.

J.J. Sutton scored 16 points for the Cobras, and Kaleb Skinner added 14 points as Wesson dropped Cathedral to 5-5 on the season.
Terry Brown had 13 points for Wesson, which led 34-26 at the half. Cathedral’s Carl Hammitte led in scoring with 18 points.
