Man killed on street

Rod Guajardo/The Natchez Democrat — Authorities responded to the scene of an accident Thursday night. One pedestrian was reportedly killed.

VIDALIA — A red Dodge Dakota pickup truck struck and killed a pedestrian who was allegedly crossing U.S. 84 in front of the Mobil station Thursday at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Louisiana State Police responded to the crash around 5:40 p.m. Richard Dwayne Thomas, 48, of Vidalia, was driving the truck in the eastbound lane. Daniel C. Savoy, 51, of Vidalia, walked into the roadway and was struck, a state police press release says.

Thomas was not injured. Savoy was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation, and routine toxicology tests are pending.

The vehicle, traveling toward Vidalia, sustained damage to the front end and a shattered back windshield.

Police officials directed traffic away from the accident, which blocked both eastbound lanes.

Concordia Parish Sheriff Randy Maxwell had no knowledge of the accident and said it was handled by state police.
