NATCHEZ — The Franklin County High School girls basketball team relied on an offensive attack that showed several different looks Saturday evening against Natchez High School.

In the first half, the visiting Lady Bulldogs primarily tried to create shots by driving to the basket and creating shots underneath it. But in the second half, Franklin County showed a little more range from beyond the arc, hitting a couple of three-pointers en route to a 50-31 win against NHS.

Briana Grayson had an excellent day offensively for Franklin County, tallying 17 points. Toni Robinson had 11 points, and Kierra Collins had 10 points.

“Our point guard (Collins) is excellent, and we’d like for her to shoot, but we know we have to go through our post players first,” Franklin County head coach Charles Moore said of his offense. “The more to our post, the more the perimeter people get open, and Briana Grayson had a really good day today.”

Keyana Miller had 12 points on a day that the hometown Lady Bulldogs were fighting through fatigue. NHS girls head coach Sue Johnson said in the future, her girls would have to fight through fatigue better than they did Saturday.

“We had good spurts, but we have to learn how to do that the whole game and persevere, even when we’re tired,” Johnson said. “It’s been a long, grueling season thus far, but it’s about to get tougher, so we have to learn how to push through tiredness.”

Trinity Episcopal

The Trinity Episcopal girls had a rough night Friday night against district opponent Columbia Academy, losing 60-25 at home. No one for the Lady Saints scored in double digits, and Abbey Ashmore led Trinity with nine points.

Spears said after the game that his team has consistently had trouble to put a whole possession together, and that his girls needed a spark to help turn things around.

“Once something good happens, it will help everything else,” Spears said. “We’re just waiting for something good to happen.”

Evidently, something good happened Saturday night, as the Lady Saints rebounded with a 45-23 win on the road at Porter’s Chapel.

Cathedral High School

The Cathedral High School girls remain winless on the season, their latest loss coming against Hinds AHS 49-15 Friday night.

Cathedral senior guard Ginny Daggett, who regularly leads the team in scoring, was held to no points against Hinds AHS. Being the lone senior, Lady Green Wave head coach Randy Smith said he can tell Daggett gets frustrated sometimes with how the season has gone thus far.

“My son won a state title his junior year, and his senior year decided not to play, because they didn’t have anyone coming back and he knew they would be rebuilding,” Smith said.

“Ginny’s having to live this thing the way my son would have. She’s tried to keep her cool, and it’s difficult to figure out what to say to her. She’s very motivated and wants to play fast, and if we didn’t have her, we’d really miss her.”
