One family member who lived nearby had unsuccessfully attempted to rescue the woman and son and suffered injuries of his own.

The Office of the Louisiana State Fire Marshal is jointly investigating the fire with the Catahoula Parish Sheriff’s Office. Family members that lived nearby reportedly observed the fire that was consuming most of the structure, they then called 911.

Investigators have not determined the exact cause of this fire. Preliminary results show it to be accidental in nature and no suspicious circumstances have been found.

The house did not have working smoke alarms, the press release said.

“Our prayers are with this family as they deal with such a terrible loss,” Fire Marshal H. “Butch” Browning said. “There was very little evidence left on the scene, but we believe the fire was an accident. I remind everyone to ensure you have working smoke alarms in your home.”
