MENDENHALL — Keyana Miller and Kiana Jones stepped up in a big way for Natchez High with Ashley Minor being held in check as the Lady Bulldogs upset the Port Gibson Lady Blue Waves 48-41 Tuesday afternoon at the Mendenhall High School Christmas Tournament.
Miller led Natchez High with a game-high 15 points while Jones was right behind her with 14 points. Kiara Johnson also had a solid game for the Lady Bulldogs as she scored eight points.
Though Port Gibson did a good job defending Minor and holding her to just five points, Natchez High did just the same against the Lady Blue Waves’ top two scorers in AndreShae Spiller and Rajee McDonald. Spiller led Port Gibson (13-2) with 10 points and McDonald added nine points. The game was tied at 23-all at halftime, but the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Blue Waves 14-10 in the third quarter and 11-8 in the fourth quarter.
Natchez High improved to 11-4 with the victory and will take on Magee today at 10:30 a.m.
Cathedral girls 47, WCCA 32
WOODVILLE — Ginny Daggett scored 16 points as the Cathedral Lady Green Wave finally won its first game of the season over the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams Tuesday night at the WCCA Tournament.
After WCCA took an 8-5 lead over Cathedral after one quarter of play the Lady Green Wave took over in surprisingly dominating fashion over the next two quarters. They outscored the Lady Rams 19-10 in the second quarter to take a 24-18 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, Cathedral’s defense played an important role in holding WCCA to just three points. At the end of that quarter, the Lady Green Wave had a 35-21 advantage.
Brandi Norwood led WCCA with a game-high 20 points. Sallie Stout and Kennedy Gray scored six points each for Cathedral (1-10). The Lady Green Wave take on Centreville Academy Thursday at 3 p.m. The Lady Rams face off against Amite School Center Thursday at 6 p.m.
Tri-County Academy girls 53, ACCS 50
MENDENHALL — Two of the best teams in their respective classifications met Tuesday afternoon at the Simpson Academy Tournament when Tri-County Academy, ranked No. 2 in MAIS Class A, faced off against a very good Adams County Christian School squad from Class AA.
And after three quarters of action, ACCS had a 36-31 lead. But the trio of Megan Heathcock, Bailey Randall and Kaysie Bennett led Tri-County’s comeback as the Lady Rebels from Flora defeated the Lady Rebels from Natchez. Heathcock led all scorers with 21 points while Randall and Bennett each had 11 points for Tri-County (13-2).
ACCS played good defense for much of the first three quarters. It held Tri-County to just seven points in the first quarter and eight in the third quarter. Tri-County did put up 16 points in the second quarter to take a 23-21 halftime lead, but ACCS rallied to go up by five at the end of the third quarter. Then Tri-County took over in the fourth quarter and ended up outscoring ACCS 22-14.
ACCS was led by Brandis White with 16 points. Tory Laird finished with 15 points and Abby Givens added 10 points. ACCS (17-2) will take on the Jackson Victors today at 1 p.m.
Silliman Institute girls 41, Trinity Episcopal 32
BROOKHAVEN — Bradleigh Brignac scored a game-high 20 points and Morgan Ohlinger had 13 points as the Silliman Institute Lady Wildcats defeated the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints Tuesday afternoon at the Brookhaven Academy Tournament.
Silliman led Trinity by just three points at halftime, 18-15. Unfortunately for the Lady Saints, they were unable to do two things in the second half that made the difference – get enough shots and free throws to fall and slow down the duo of Brignac and Ohlinger.
Rosie Woods led Trinity with 10 points and Mallory Lancaster chipped in with eight points. The Lady Saints (6-6) will take on East Rankin Academy today at 11 a.m.
Centreville Academy girls 45, Amite School Center 32
WOODVILLE — After playing a sluggish first half, Centreville Academy took over in the second half and there was nothing Amite School Center could do about it as the Lady Tigers took care of the Lady Rebels Tuesday afternoon at the WCCA Tournament.
Centreville led Amite School Center 12-8 after one quarter of play, but the Lady Rebels answered by outscoring the Lady Tigers 11-6 in the second quarter for a stunning 19-18 halftime lead. The final two quarters, however, belonged to Centreville. Led by Katie Berry, Renee Miley and Ashton Crum, the Lady Tigers dominated the Lady Rebels on both ends of the court leading to a 12-6 advantage in the third quarter and a 15-7 edge in the fourth quarter.
Berry led all scorers with 19 points while Miley and Crum each scored nine points. Centreville (9-5) takes on Cathedral Thursday at 3 p.m. to begin Day 2 of tournament action.
