NATCHEZ — The amazing season for the Cathedral Lady Green Wave varsity soccer team continued on a cold Tuesday night at D’Evereaux Stadium when they defeated the Brookhaven Lady Panthers 2-1.

Cathedral was led by Maddy Christian and Caitlin Lofton, who each scored a goal in this non-region game. The Lady Green Wave also did a good job when Brookhaven had possession by limiting the Class 5A Lady Panthers to just the one goal.

The Lady Green Wave improved to 9-2 overall and will look to remain undefeated in MHSAA Region 6-1A/2A/3A when they play at Loyd Star next Monday at 5:30 p.m. They are currently 3-0 in region play.

Brookhaven 3, Cathedral boys 2

Kyle Bradley scored the Green Wave’s only offensive goal as the Green Wave fell to Brookhaven Friday.

The game was 1-1 at the half, then Brookhaven scored two unanswered goals to make it 3-1 late in the second period. But a miscue by Brookhaven caused the ball to bounce off a Panthers defender into their own goal goal, making in 3-2.

“I was thinking, we’ll take that,” Cathedral head coach Dennis Hogue said. “After that, it was like a light bulb went on. I told (assistant) Coach Rick (Simons), it looks like we have a soccer team now. We kept attacking their goal and pulling the trigger, we were just unable to get that last goal.”

Cathedral featured a new lineup, with two forwards and four midfelders. Among those changes, Dale Matheny moved from midfielder to sweeper and Dylan Sandidge to sweeper to midfielder. Hogue said despite the loss, the team feels good about things going forward.

“It’s easier to move the ball around and we have better control, we spread the field better, and we’re getting a little better buildup play.” Hogue said. “We were just having fun out there.”

Cathedral (2-9, 1-2) will host St. Aloysius Friday.
