ERIC SHELTON | THE NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT — River Oaks’ Alex Biedenharn, left, tries to get around ACCS’s Hunter Lindsey during their soccer match Wednesday evening at ACCS. The Rebels lost the game 5-2.

NATCHEZ — The Adams County Christian School soccer team got off to a fast start Wednesday night at home against the River Oaks Mustangs. But River Oaks was able to storm back with five goals in the second half to cruise to a 5-2 victory over the Rebels.

The Rebels got goals from Tanner Martin and Nathan Latimer in the first half to jump out to a 2-0 halftime lead. River Oaks outshot the Rebels 10 to three in the first half, but ACCS was more efficient with their efforts as they scored on both of the shots they put on goal.

River Oaks continued to dominate the shot totals in the second half, and some of those shots started finding their way behind the Rebels’ backup goalkeepers. Starting goalkeeper Dylan Galbreath was forced to come out of the contest early in the second half with an injury.

Garrett Breard and Jordan Sutton both netted two goals in the second half for the Mustangs, and Davis Harris added one.

“In the first half we played like a million bucks, at state-championship level play,” ACCS head coach Jim Allgood said. “Then (Galbreath) got hurt, and it’s like one of our team captains said (after the game), ‘We broke down.’

“We were up 2-0 at halftime and instead of turning the intensity up we brought it down.”

River Oaks ended the game with a total of 24 shots with 15 shots on goal. The Rebels had just four shots on goal out of a total of seven shots.

Allgood said he thought the loss of Galbreath affected the Rebels.

“It’s all about teamwork,” Allgood said. “Without teamwork the kids that want to play and win a championship can’t do it. One player can’t win. We have to play together as a team.”

Allgood said the 13 days between games for the Rebels was obvious in the second half.

“We had some rust, and it really kind of showed,” he said. “But this gives us something to work toward going into the second half of the season.”

Allgood said he was glad to get all of his varsity players some playing time in the contest.

“We had some injuries in the second half, but we got all the high school guys a bunch of playing time,” he said.

And Allgood said the players that played gained some valuable experience in the contest.

“This was one of the better teams last year, and they are probably one of the better teams (in Louisiana) this year,” he said.

The loss dropped ACCS to 8-3-1 on the season, Allgood said. The Rebels will play again at 2 p.m. Saturday at home against Laurel Christian.
