Police jury wants more committee involvement

VIDALIA — While no black-eyed peas or greens were served, the Concordia Parish Police Jury announced some New Year’s resolutions for 2012 during its meeting Monday.

President Melvin Ferrington said his goal for the year is to see committees, such as public works and finance, meet more often and be more involved before the police jury meetings.

“I just think if they meet and discuss things at those meetings before bringing them here it would go more smoothly,” Ferrington said. “Instead of bringing everything to this board in one lump sum, let them meet, discuss it and then bring it here.”

Ferrington said working on drainage issues within the parish is an ongoing plan, but that he hopes it can get pushed to the top of the priority list this year.

“We’ve met with FEMA and they said they were very interested in doing a study and helping us pay for it,” Ferrington said.

In other news from the police jury meeting:

• Melvin Ferrington was elected president of the board and Red Tiffee was elected vice president.

• Dempsey Hillen, Virgil Barnes and Harvey Cowan were all reappointed to the Fire District No. 2 board.

• Bobbie Calhoun was reappointed to the library board.

• The Town of Ridgecrest Mayor Dwayne Sikes sent a letter to the police jury asking for help to repair ditches.
