Girls roundups: Wilkinson Co. beats JCHS

FAYETTE — The Wilkinson County Lady Wildcats picked up another big win in MHSAA Region 7-3A as they defeated the Jefferson County Lady Tigers 63-53 Friday night.

Lineasia Palmer led the way for Wilkinson County with a game-high 25 points and Malesia Slack added 16 points. The Lady Wildcats led Jefferson County 27-19 at halftime before the Lady Tigers got back in the game with a 17-12 advantage in the third quarter.

However, the Lady Wildcats had a response of their own as they outscored the Lady Tigers 24-17 in the fourth quarter. Sasha Carter chipped in with nine points for Wilkinson County (13-8, 3-1). Brandy Buck led the Lady Tigers with 14 points while Haley Turner and Keionne January had 12 points each.

The loss knocked Jefferson County into a tie for second place in Region 7-3A with Wilkinson County at 3-1. The Lady Tigers are now 10-10 overall. Both teams will be on the road next Tuesday as Jefferson County will be at Franklin County while Wilkinson County travels to Prentiss.

Franklin County 71,

Hazlehurst 34

HAZLEHURST — Kierra Collins had a game-high 20 points and Toni Robinson had 10 points as the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs hammered the Hazlehurst Lady Indians Friday night to remain undefeated in MHSAA Region 7-3A.

Franklin County put the game away with a dominating performance in the second quarter. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Hazlehurst 20-5 in that quarter to go up 34-12 at halftime. And as the second half went along, the Lady Bulldogs continued to add to their big lead.

With the win, Franklin County improved to 4-0 in Region 7-3A — one game ahead of Wilkinson County and the team it hosts next Tuesday night in Jefferson County. The Lady Bulldogs are now 14-4 overall.

Brandon 61,

Natchez High 59 (OT)

BRANDON — Olivia Countiss and Kristina Trigg scored 10 points apiece to lead a balanced scoring attack for Brandon as the host Lady Bulldogs defeated the visiting Natchez High Lady Bulldogs in overtime Friday night in Region 6-6A action.

Led by Ashley Minor and Rashonae Rice, Natchez High forced overtime by outscoring Brandon 16-12 in the fourth quarter. But Brandon was able to pull out the victory thanks to an 8-6 edge in the extra session. Six players for Brandon (16-4, 4-0) scored between seven and 10 points.

Minor led Natchez High (15-6, 1-3) with a game-high 23 points while Rice chipped in with 15 points. The Lady Bulldogs play host to McComb Tuesday night.

Monterey 47,

Avoyelles Charter 40

MANSURA, La. — Kaley Baker finished with 11 points to lead Monterey as the Lady Wolves jumped out to a big lead and then held on for a seven-point over the Avoyelles Charter Lady Vikings in LHSAA District 4-B play Friday night.

Monterey led Avoyelles Charter 16-6 after one quarter of play and 32-18 at halftime. The Lady Vikings tried to mount a comeback in the second half, but could only outscore the Lady Wolves by one point in the third quarter, 10-9, and that proved to be a key factor.

Kristin Russell had 10 points while Ellen Bairnsfather and Jessica McNeil ended up with eight points each for Monterey (15-6, 2-0). The Lady Wolves play at Rapides Tuesday night.

Ferriday 47,

Lake Providence 46

LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. — ShaKeria Kelly led Ferriday with a game-high 31 points as the Lady Trojans held on for a one-point win over the Lake Providence Lady Panthers Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-2A game.

Even though Kelly had an outstanding performance for the Lady Trojans, it was almost for naught. Ferriday led by three points at the end of the first quarter, but Lake Providence chipped away a little at the lead over the next two quarters and was down by just one point, 34-33, at the end of the third quarter. However, the Lady Trojans were able to hang on as both teams ended up scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter.

MeElle Reed and Trenace Morgan scored six points each for Ferriday (4-11, 1-1). The Lady Trojans play at Homer next Tuesday.

Bowling Green 42,

Centreville Academy 32

CENTREVILLE — Bowling Green School wasn’t able to put away Centreville Academy in this MAIS District 6-AA match-up Friday night, but the Lady Buccaneers’ defense its job in a 10-point victory for the top-ranked team in Class AA.

Bowling Green led by eight points at the end of the first quarter, but its lead was cut to six points by halftime. Yet that would be as close as Centreville would get the rest of the way despite putting up a valiant effort.

Reagon Moody led Bowling Green (20-1, 4-0) with 14 points and Melissa Crowe had 11 points. Katie Berry had 21 points and four steals to lead Centreville (12-8, 1-4) which hosts Silliman Institute next Tuesday night.

Brookhaven Academy 61, Trinity Episcopal 13

BROOKHAVEN — Once again, the Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars played like the defending Overall champions as they handily defeated the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints in MAIS District 5-AA action Friday night.

Actually, much of the action took place when Brookhaven Academy had the ball. Led by Terah Winborne, who had 12 points, and Carey Crozier, who added 10 points, the Lady Cougars completely dominated the Lady Saints from start to finish. At halftime, the score was 40-5 in favor of the Lady Cougars.

Abbey Ashmore led Trinity Episcopal (7-10, 0-2) with five points. The Lady Saints play at Silliman Institute Monday night.

Buckeye 77, Vidalia 41

BUCKEYE, La. — Led by Dani Carter and Taylor Brown, the Buckeye Lady Panthers annihilated the Vidalia Lady Vikings Friday night in LHSAA District 3-3A play.

Carter led all scorers with 20 points and Brown wasn’t too far behind with 17 points. Buckeye had too much firepower for Vidalia to keep up with over the first three quarters and it showed in a big way. After putting up 26 points in the first quarter, the Lady Panthers scored 31 points in the second quarter en route to a 57-27 halftime lead. By the end of three quarters, they led the Lady Vikings 72-34.

Shermel Bell scored nine points and Nyishia Randall had seven points for Vidalia (0-2 in District 3-3A). The Lady Vikings host Jena Tuesday night.

WCCA 56,

Amite School Center 40

WOODVILLE — Terri Fisher torched Amite School Center for 30 points in leading the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams past the Lady Rebels in an MAIS District 6-A game Friday night.

WCCA (4-11, 2-2) led by just one point after one quarter of play before pulling away from Amite School Center over the next two quarters. The Lady Rams outscored the Lady Rebels 20-11 in the second quarter and 16-6 in the third quarter for a commanding 46-26 lead.

Tamera Batiste added nine points and Brandi Norwood chipped in with eight points for the Lady Rams, who play at CENLA Christian Academy next Tuesday.
