Districts heat up

NATCHEZ — The Adams County Christian School girls’ basketball team put together an impressive run to start its season.

The Lady Rebels went 20-1 in contests played outside of MAIS District 5-AA. But Friday night’s 61-54 loss to Columbia Academy dropped ACCS to 0-2 in district play on the season and has head coach Melanie Hall looking for ways to improve as the Lady Rebels face a tough schedule going forward.

“I’m excited about it,” Hall said. “From here on out, it’s rugged. Every night that we go out to play, we have to be ready. I think (Friday) our kids came out focused and ready to play. They battled hard, and I’m excited about going to look at that game film so I can see some more things and make some adjustments and just get better.”

Hall said the key will be for her team to focus on getting better, and the district wins will start to fall in place.

ERIC SHELTON | THE NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT — ACCS’s Brandis White goes up for a shot during Friday’s home game against Columbia Academy at ACCS. The Lady Rebels have started slow in district play this season.

“If we can continue to improve, I’ve got a lot of confidence in this team. I believe in them. They’re a very unified team,” Hall said. “I think if we can continue to take care of the little things and stay focused, and not let a defeat here or there get us down, but learn from it and get better, we’ll have fun in the postseason.”

ACCS (20-3, 0-2) will look for revenge against Columbia Academy Tuesday night on the road.

Ferriday girls split first two

district games

The Ferriday High School Lady Trojans got a much-needed victory Friday night at Lake Providence to improve to 1-1 in LHSAA District 2-2A play.

The Lady Trojans one-point win not only got them back to .500 in district play but also helped the team’s confidence, head coach Lisa Abron said.

“It’s a very big (win) because our confidence level needs to come back up after Tuesday’s loss (to Sterlington),” she said. “It’s tough to come to Lake Providence and beat them at home. It’s an added plus winning away from home.”

With the bulk of the district schedule still in front of the Lady Trojans, Abron said her young team must improve on some of its weaknesses.

“We have to cut down on turnovers,” she said. “It’s a young team, and we are still learning. Rebounding has hurt us in a couple of our losses, and we are going to have to get back and work on those things.”

Abron said she still likes Ferriday’s chances in a district that will come down to the wire.

“District 2-2A is up for grabs,” she said. “A lot of teams have lost a lot of seniors from last year. We are all rebuilding, so it’s kind of up for grabs. It’s anybody’s game on any given night.”

Ferriday will hit the road again Tuesday night in a district matchup with Homer.

Cathedral drops two region games

The Lady Green Wave lost twice in Region 7-1A play last week.

Cathedral lost a close game with West Lincoln Tuesday and followed that up with a lopsided loss to Piney Woods Friday night to fall to 0-4 in the region standings.

“We still have just one senior,” head coach Randy Smith said. “We have eighth graders on the court and are a very young team, and it shows.”

Smith said the Lady Green Wave’s biggest issue so far has been putting the ball in the net.

“Shooting right now is the big thing,” he said. “We play good defense and have good (shot) selection. We’re just not making shots.”

Smith said Cathedral is also dealing with several illnesses on the team that have caused girls to miss games.

The Lady Green Wave will travel to face Hinds AHS Tuesday in another region game.
