Prep roundups: NHS girls rally to beat Brandon 45-42

NATCHEZ — Kiara Johnson led Natchez High with a game-high 13 points and Keyana Miller scored 10 points as the Lady Bulldogs needed a fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Brandon Lady Bulldogs 45-42 Friday night in MHSAA Region 6-6A action.

Natchez High struggled to score in the first half. Luckily for the host Lady Bulldogs, Brandon wasn’t able to capitalize on that and only trailed by five points, 21-16, at halftime. The visiting Lady Bulldogs, who got 12 points from Doshua McCray and 10 points from Bri Hobson, led by six points at the end of the third quarter before Natchez High responded in a big way.

Led by Johnson, Miller and Kiana Jones, Natchez High outscored Brandon 18-9 in the fourth quarter to come away with the three-point win. Jones finished with nine points. Natchez High (16-5, 2-3) hosts Vicksburg next Tuesday night.

Franklin County girls 55,

Crystal Springs 17

MEADVILLE — Toni Robinson finished with 14 points while Kierra Sykes and Kierra Collins had seven points to lead the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs to an easy win over the Crystal Springs Lady Tigers in an MHSAA Region 7-3A game Friday night.

Franklin County (16-4, 6-0) almost shut out Crystal Springs in the first quarter, but the Lady Tigers managed to get on the scoreboard before the quarter was over only to trail 22-2. At halftime, the Lady Bulldogs led 36-6. Franklin County next plays at Wilkinson County Tuesday night.

Cathedral boys 63, Bogue Chitto 31

BOGUE CHITTO — D.J. Perry led all scorers with 22 points as the Cathedral Green Wave rolled past the Bogue Chitto Bobcats Friday night in MHSAA Region 7-1A play.

Cathedral led by just six points after one quarter of play before outscoring Bogue Chitto a combined 39-7 over the next two quarters to put away the Bobcats. Jamon Gray and Khalil Brice had 10 points each for the Green Wave (12-10, 2-4), which plays at St. Aloysius next Tuesday night.

Jefferson County girls 78, Prentiss 54

FAYETTE — Brandy Buck led four Jefferson County players in double figures with 17 points as the Lady Tigers defeated the Prentiss Lady Bulldogs Friday night in MHSAA Region 7-3A action.

Jefferson County took control of the game in the first quarter and led 23-10 by the end of the quarter. When halftime had arrived, the Lady Tigers had a commanding 41-20 lead. Jefferson County (9-10, 4-2) hosts Crystal Springs Tuesday night.

Trinity Episcopal boys 69,

Columbia Academy 42

COLUMBIA — The first and fourth quarters proved to be beneficial to Trinity Episcopal in the Saints’ 27-point win over the Columbia Academy Cougars in MAIS District 5-AA action Friday night.

Trinity Episcopal (14-7, 2-1) jumped out to a 17-7 lead after one quarter of play and in the fourth quarter the Saints outscored Columbia Academy 14-0 to finish off the Cougars. Trae McKenzie led Trinity with 14 points. The Saints play at ACCS Tuesday night.

WCCA boys 72,

Chamberlain-Hunt 20

WOODVILLE — Dre’ Tolliver had a game-high 20 points and Tramel McKinsey added 16 points as the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams routed Chamberlain-Hunt Academy in an MAIS District 6-A game Friday night.

WCCA dominated Chamberlain-Hunt in the first quarter and by the time the quarter was over, the Rams had a 25-3 advantage and then led at halftime 42-15. Ethan Carruth had 10 points for WCCA (12-4, 4-2), which plays at Prentiss Christian today.

Bogue Chitto girls 58,

Cathedral 46

BOGUE CHITTO — Adrienne Wallace led Bogue Chitto with 14 points and Christian Black chipped in with 10 points as the Lady Bobcats held on for a 12-point win over the Cathedral Lady Green Wave Friday night in Region 7-1A action.

Bogue Chitto had a 34-18 lead and did enough scoring to hold off Cathedral in the second half – even with Cathedral scoring 21 points in the third quarter. Ginny Daggett scored 14 points to lead the Lady Green Wave (2-17, 0-6), which next plays at St. Aloysius Tuesday night.

Avoyelles girls 74, Vidalia 22

VIDALIA — Kourtney McGhee had 23 points and Markeisha Johnson added 21 points to lead the Avoyelles Lady Mustangs past the Vidalia Lady Vikings in LHSAA District 3-3A action Friday night.

Vidalia (N/A, 0-4) was never able to get into a flow against Avoyelles’ defense throughout the game. The Lady Mustangs held the Lady Vikings under 10 points in each quarter. Fran Duson and Nyishia Randall scored seven points each for Vidalia, which plays at Marksville next Tuesday night.

Brandon boys 82,

Natchez High 57

NATCHEZ — DeArius Griffin led Natchez High with a game-high 20 points, but it was not enough to slow down the Brandon Bulldogs in their 25-point win over the host Bulldogs in an MHSAA Region 6-6A game Friday night.

Natchez High led Brandon 17-10 after one quarter of play, but Brandon took over in the second quarter and never looked back. Ladarius Porter led four Brandon players in double figures with 19 points. Natchez High (8-13, 0-5) hosts Vicksburg Tuesday night.

Centreville Academy boys 46, Oak Forest 31

CENTREVILLE — Michael Keith had a game-high 14 points and Jake Darden had 13 points to lead the Centreville Academy Tigers past the Oak Forest Academy Yellow Jackets Friday night in MAIS District 6-AA action.

The game was tied at 18-all at halftime before Centreville put the game away thanks to a 21-7 advantage over Oak Forest in the third quarter. The Tigers (6-14, 1-6) plays at Central Private next Tuesday.

Columbia Academy girls 61, Trinity Episcopal 27

COLUMBIA — Sissy Price finished with 16 points and Anna Wilks added 12 points to lead the Columbia Academy Lady Cougars to a 34-point win over the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints in MAIS District 5-AA play Friday night.

Columbia Academy led Trinity Episcopal 28-15 at halftime and took a 44-21 lead into the fourth quarter. Abbey Ashmore had 11 points for the Lady Saints (7-12, 0-3), who play at ACCS Tuesday night.

Avoyelles boys 62, Vidalia 54

VIDALIA — Vidalia had no answer for Avoyelles’ Jacquez Friels, who scored 33 points and the Mustangs needed them to escape with an eight-point win over the Vikings Friday night in LHSAA District 3-3A action.

Avoyelles trailed Vidalia 31-28 at halftime before taking a one-point lead at the end of the third quarter and then outscoring Vidalia 23-16 in the fourth quarter. Vidalia was led by Michael Whitley with 14 points. The Vikings (N/A, 1-3) play at Marksville Tuesday night.

St. Mary’s boys 61, Block 52

JONESVILLE, La. — Darien Porchia had a game-high 25 points and Steele Merritt had 17 points as the St. Mary’s Tigers edged past the Block Bears in LHSAA District 4-1A action Friday night.

The second half was the difference in the outcome of this game. St. Mary’s outscored Block 16-13 in the third quarter and 19-13 in the fourth quarter to break a tie ball game at halftime. Dorian Bowman scored 20 points and Ty Bell had 10 points for Block (12-5, 2-1), which next hosts Northwood-Lena Tuesday night.
