NATCHEZ — The Adams County Board of Supervisors appointed two new members to the Natchez-Adams County Recreation Commission Thursday.
Those appointed were Leigh Ann Mason and Ralph Daniels. They were appointed to fill the spots vacated by District 2 Supervisor David Carter and former commission member David New.
“All of the individuals who were nominated did an excellent job in the interviews, but we narrowed it down to those two,” Supervisors President Darryl Grennell said.
Others considered included Forrest Foster, Lou Ellen Stout and Chris Hinton.
Mason said she started gaining interest in serving on the commission and seeing the proposed recreation complex come together after traveling to various softball tournaments with her daughters.
“We go all across the country — we have been to Missouri, Florida, Tuscaloosa — and everybody’s facilities are top-notch facilities compared to ours,” she said. “I think our children deserve to play in the best facilities possible, and that is what sparked my attention into it.”
Mason also said she is tired of hearing people talk about past projects that didn’t come to fruition.
“I think if we keep at it and have faith in our community and in our town, we can get it done,” she said. “I hear people say, ‘Oh we tried this in 1985,’ or, ‘We tried this in 1997.’ I want to say, ‘That is in the past,’ and push on to the future and work toward these goals and see what we can get done.”
Daniels said he has had a long time involvement in city basketball leagues and volunteers regularly at the Broadmoor park complex.
“I kind of figured that even though they may have people that are doing this, I might have some kind of positive input in making (the recreation project) go because I have a pretty direct beeline with the young people and what they want and what they may expect but haven’t been getting so far,” Daniels said.
“We want to do it good, and we want to do it where it leaves few questions as to why we did it that way.
“I am chomping at the bit to get out there and get something done.”
Since he resigned as a commission member, Carter been appointed as an ex officio member of the commission to serve as a liaison between the group and the board.
