Ben Hillyer | The Natchez Democrat — McLaurin third grade teacher April McDonell, left, didn’t have to pedal her tricycle to victory Friday morning. She powered her trike like Fred Flintstone and won a pizza party for her class during the school’s Accelerated Reader kickoff.
McLaurin Elementary teachers competed in a newspaper olympics, sponsored by The Natchez Democrat, carrying newspapers by tricycle and showing their aiming skill throwing newspapers into baskets. The Democrat is a Partner in Education with the school and is working with teachers for the remainder of the school year to focus on improving reading levels by motivating third graders to read. Each week the newspaper will feature a McLaurin Acclerated Reader of the week. Here are other scenes from Friday’s kickoff:
