NATCHEZ — A motor home was suddenly converted into a submarine early Sunday morning after it accidentally rolled into the Mississippi River from Silver Street.

According to the report filed at the Natchez Police Department, police responded to the call at 12:20 a.m.

The owner of the Rexhall motorhome, James Gilmore, told police he had the 38-foot vehicle parked near the Under-the-Hill Saloon.

Gilmore was preparing to leave when he stepped out of the vehicle to close a door and the motorhome started to roll. He tried to jump back into the vehicle to stop it, but it was moving too quickly and he had to jump away, the report said.

The vehicle — valued at approximately $250,000 — rolled into the river, and the report states that the responding officer could see it floating down the river but lost sight of it once it passed the Mississippi River bridge.

Gilmore suffered a shoulder injury during the incident, and was treated at a local hospital.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified of the incident.
