Prep roundups: 12 Franklin County girls score in win

FAYETTE — The Franklin County Lady Bulldogs have 14 players on their roster. Of those 14 players, 12 of them reached the scoring column against Crystal Springs Thursday afternoon.
Sabrina Brown led the top-seeded Lady Bulldogs with 12 points while Kierra Collins and Latorya Griffin added eight points each as they rolled to a 61-27 win over fifth-seeded Crystal Springs in the girls’ semifinal round of the MHSAA Region 7-3A Tournament at Jefferson County High School.
The Lady Tigers were no match for one of the best teams in all of Class 3A. At the end of the first quarter, Franklin County had a 15-6 lead and by halftime it had a commanding 35-13 advantage. Briana Grayson scored seven points and Toni Robinson had five points for the Lady Bulldogs improved to 21-4 overall and will take on Jefferson County today at 7 p.m. in the girls’ championship game.
Jefferson County girls 68, Prentiss 57
Haley Turner scored 17 points while Keionne January and Diamond Gaines had 15 points each as the Jefferson County Lady Tigers overcame an early deficit to defeat the Prentiss Lady Bulldogs Thursday night at the MHSAA Region 7-3A Tournament.
Prentiss, the No. 6 seed, tried to play spoiler again after ending Wilkinson County’s season Tuesday night. Led by Myaah West and Abby Williams, the Lady Bulldogs got off to a good start and led No. 2 seed Jefferson County 19-15 at the end of the first quarter. Then the Lady Tigers went on a tear in the second quarter as they outscored the Lady Bulldogs 25-4 to take a 40-23 lead into halftime. The Lady Tigers led by 19 at the end of three quarters.
West finished with 15 points and Williams had 14 to lead Prentiss, which will take on Crystal Springs in the girls’ third-place game today at 4 p.m. Malikia Graves chipped in with 13 points for Jefferson County, which will take on Franklin County in the girls’ championship game today at 7 p.m.

Not many people gave Franklin County a chance to make it past the opening round of the MHSAA Region 7-3A Tournament. But now Franklin County is in the boys’ championship game after a shocking come-from-behind win over the top-seeded Crystal Springs Tigers Thursday night in the semifinal round.
The Bulldogs trailed Crystal Springs 16-13 at halftime before outscoring the Tigers 13-8 in the third quarter and 20-17 in the fourth quarter. Franklin County was led by Fred Nelson with 16 points and Antony Green added 12 points. The Bulldogs will take on Hazlehurst today at 8:30 p.m.
Hazlehurst boys 59, Jefferson County 39
efferson County had no answer for Hazlehurst’s Trojuan White, who led all scorers with 30 points as the Indians defeated the Tigers in a boys’ semifinal-round game Thursday night at the MHSAA Region 7-3A Tournament.
Hazlehurst, the No. 2 seed, took control of the game early in the first quarter and never allowed Jefferson County, the No. 3 seed, to get back in the game. The Indians held the Tigers to just three points in the first quarter and led at halftime 28-12.
Jefferson County was led by RyYale Brown and Jarmell Anderson with nine points each. The Tigers will take on the loser of the Franklin County/Crystal Springs game today at 5:30 p.m. in the boys’ third-place game.

Amite School Center 38
LIBERTY — Antonio Zentero scored 13 points and Trenton Hall had 12 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for Wilkinson County Christian Academy as the Rams took care of the Amite School Center Rebels Thursday night in the boys’ semifinal round at the MAIS District 6-A Tournament.
Tramel McKensie and Dre’ Tolliver added 11 points apiece for WCCA (17-4), which dominated ASC in the first quarter en route to a 26-8 lead. When halftime arrived, the Rams were on top of the Rebels 44-20.
Next up for WCCA is the boys’ championship game Saturday at 7:45 p.m. against Tallulah Academy.

Tensas Academy 42
LIBERTY — Jake Busby led top-seeded Tallulah Academy with 17 points as the Trojans held on for a four-point win over the fourth-seeded Tensas Academy Chiefs Thursday afternoon in the boys’ semifinals of the MAIS District 6-A Tournament at Amite School Center.
Tallulah Academy seemed to be in control of the game after taking a 22-15 lead into halftime. But Tensas Academy found its offensive rhythm in the third quarter and outscored the Trojans 17-11 to cut their lead to one point, 33-32, at the end of the quarter.
However, the Trojans ended any thoughts of an upset win by outscoring the Chiefs 13-10 in the fourth quarter. Blaine Fletcher led Tensas Academy with a game-high 20 points. The Chiefs will take on Amite School Center Saturday at 5:15 p.m. in the boys’ consolation game. The Trojans will take on WCCA Saturday at 7:45 p.m. in the boys’ championship game.

LIBERTY — Terri Fisher ended up with a game-high 23 points and Brandi Norwood added 12 points as the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams defeated the Amite School Center Lady Rebels Thursday afternoon in the girls’ semifinals of the MAIS District 6-A Tournament.
WCCA got off to a strong start even though ASC had the home-court advantage. The Lady Rams led the Lady Rebels 14-5 after one quarter of play, but saw their lead cut to seven points at halftime and then down to five points by the end of the third quarter. But the Lady Rams answered by outscoring the Lady Rebels 20-11 in the fourth quarter.
WCCA (6-15) will take on Tallulah Academy Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in the girls’ championship game.

Tensas Academy 37
LIBERTY — Allie Kate Gossett led four Tallulah Academy players in double figures with 18 points as the top-seeded Lady Trojans easily defeated the fourth-seeded Tensas Academy Lady Chiefs Thursday night at the MAIS District 6-A Tournament.
Tallulah Academy jumped out to a 16-9 lead over Tensas Academy after one quarter of play and then led at halftime 35-19. The Lady Trojans got 14 points from K. Oliver and 10 points each from K. Barrett and R. Walker.
Tensas Academy was led by Bailey Keyes with nine points and Taylor Olds with eight points. The Lady Chiefs will take on Amite School Center at 4 p.m. Saturday in the girls’ consolation game.
