NATCHEZ — The Trinity Episcopal boys’ basketball team forced 26 turnovers and allowed just 33 points en route to a 62-33 win over Columbia Academy Thursday night at Adams County Christian School in the District-5AA Tournament.
Trinity took control of the game in the first half by forcing 19 turnovers with its full-court press defense and allowing just 14 points in the opening half.
“I thought our defense set the tone for sure,” Trinity head coach David King said. “We came out in the press and at times switched up our presses and at times it was effective.”
King said Trinity’s depth also played a key role in wearing down Columbia throughout the game.
The Saints’ depth also showed on the offensive end as 10 players scored in the game.
“We always want to try to be a team with balanced scoring,” King said. “Our defense dictates transition baskets.”
Tanner Cage was the only Saints’ player in double-digits with 11 points. Trey Fleming scored nine, Trae McKenzie scored eight and Taylor Strahan added seven points to lead the way for Trinity.
Columbia’s Alex Price led all scorers with 17 points.
The outcome of the game was never in doubt, as Trinity took a 14-6 lead after the first quarter and extended that lead to 16 by halftime.
Trinity led 45-21 at the end of the third quarter and cruised to the 29-point victory.
The win puts Trinity in the championship game Saturday night, and King said making it to the last round is a good feeling.
“It’s good to get to the finals,” he said. “We will have our hands full with Brookhaven.”
The championship game will be played at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at ACCS.
