NATCHEZ — Saturday is the last day potential voters in Adams County can register and still be eligible to vote in the upcoming presidential primaries.

Adams County Circuit Clerk Eddie Walker said the circuit clerk’s office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday to facilitate voter registration. Registrations must be done in person or the office must receive the voter registration application by mail by noon Saturday, Walker said.

“Those who are 17 but are going to be 18 on or before the Nov. 6 general election can register and vote in the presidential primaries,” Walker said.

Mississippi has two primary elections, March 13 and an April 3 runoff.

“Because the runoff is a continuation of the first primary, that means you have to be registered by Saturday,” Walker said.

Mississippi’s primaries are closed primaries, so voters have to declare which party they wish to cast their ballots for.

On the Republican ballot are primaries for the U.S. President, U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives Third Congressional District.

The Republican presidential race includes candidates Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Gary Johnson, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. Bachmann, Hunstman and Perry have suspended their campaigns but remain on the ballot. Johnson suspended his campaign as a Republican but is pursuing the Libertarian ticket.

The Republican primary for the Senate will include candidates E. Allen Hathcock, Robert Maloney and the incumbent, Roger F. Wicker. The House primary is between Robert J. Allen and the sitting Congressman, Gregg Harper.

The same races are on the Democratic ballot, but two of the races — the presidential and congressional — are unopposed, with Barack Obama and Crystal C. Biggs running for the respective offices.

The Democratic Senate ticket includes candidates Albert N. Gore Jr., Will Oatis and Roger Weiner.
