Cathedral boys take third place

NATCHEZ — The Cathedral boys’ basketball recovered quickly from its semi-final loss to Piney Woods and secured third place in Region 7-1A with a 57-50 victory over Hinds AHS Friday night.

D.J. Perry and Caleb Upton led the way for the Green Wave. Perry finished with 17 points, while Upton had 15.

The two teams played to a 13-13 tie after one quarter, before Cathedral pushed ahead and led by five at halftime.

Hinds closed the gap slightly in the third quarter, and the Green Wave took a 42-38 lead into the final frame.

The Green Wave outscored Hinds 15-12 in the fourth quarter to get the seven-point victory.

Cathedral will travel to face the loser of East Oktibbeha and West Lowndes in the first round of the playoffs Tuesday.

Avoyelles 49, Vidalia 45

MOREAUVILLE, La. — The Vidalia High School boys’ basketball team took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter of its game against Avoyelles High School Friday night, but the Vikings were unable to hold to win in their final game of the season.

Avoyelles used a 20-point fourth quarter to edge the Vikings 49-45.

Michael Whitley led Vidalia with 18 points in the contest. Dee Whitley was the Vikings’ second-leading scorer with eight points.

Avoyelles Jacquez Friels led all scorers with 25 points.

Vidalia ended its season with a 10-19 record.
