Trinity boys advance, girls eliminated

MENDENHALL — The Trinity Episcopal varsity boys started off strong in the MAIS Class AA South State tournament as two Saints players scored in double digits in Trinity’s 56-41 win against Silliman Institute Monday.
Senior Tip McKenzie led the Saints in scoring with 15 points, while brother Trae McKenzie tallied six points and 15 rebounds against Silliman. Tanner Cage added 12 points for the Saints.
Trinity outscored the Wildcats 15-3 in the first quarter and had a 24-18 lead at intermission.
Colt Ducote led the Wildcats in scoring with 18 points, and Riley Sones scored 15 points. But Silliman only managed eight points outside of those two.
Trinity (22-9) will play Wayne Academy at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday in the second round of the South State tournament.
Silliman 53, Trinity girls 30
Rosie Woods and Ashleigh Williams both tallied nine points for the Lady Saints, but Trinity had no answer for Silliman’s Kayla Davidson.
Davidson led in scoring with 21 points as the Lady Wildcats eliminated the Lady Saints in the first round of the South State tournament.
Abbey Ashmore scored five points for Trinity, which trailed 37-19 at halftime. Margaret Ward had four points for the Lady Saints.
Silliman’s Ashley Hurst had nine points for the Lady Wildcats, and Bradleigh Brignac scored eight points.
Trinity finished its season 8-21.
