NATCHEZ — Absentee voting for the March 13 presidential primary in Adams County is under way.
Adams County Circuit Clerk Eddie Walker said the circuit clerk’s office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily to allow for absentee voting. The office will also be open from 8 a.m. to noon March 3 and 10 for the same reason.
Those who qualify to absentee vote are those who will be out of the county on election day, those living temporarily outside the confines of the United States, college students who attend school outside the county, those in the armed forces and those aged 65 and older, Walker said.
Members of the armed forces and those living overseas now have the ability to absentee vote via the Internet. To do so, they would have to fill out a Federal Post Card Application.
“When they do that, they will be instructed to go to a specific website where they will be told to download their specific ballot, print it, mark it, scan it and e-mail it back,” Walker said.
The deadline to vote absentee is March 10. Mail-in ballots must be received by the circuit clerk’s office by 5 p.m. March 12.
On the primary ballots will be Republican and Democratic candidates for U.S. President, U.S. Senator and Mississippi’s Third District U.S. Congressman.
The presidential candidates on the Republican ballot include Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Gary Johnson, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. Bachmann, Huntsman and Perry remain on the ballot, but have suspended their campaigns. Johnson has suspended his Republican campaign but is pursuing the Libertarian ticket.
The Republican primary for the Senate will be between E. Allen Hathcock, Robert Maloney and the incumbent, Roger F. Wicker.
The House primary is between Robert J. Allen and the sitting Congressman, Gregg Harper.
The same races are on the Democratic ballot, but the presidential and congressional candidates are unopposed. Barack Obama is the presidential nominee and Crystal C. Biggs is the congressional nominee.
The Democratic Senate ticket will be between Albert N. Gore Jr., Will Oatis and Roger Weiner.
