MENDENHALL — Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels head coach Melanie Hall said after losing to Brookhaven Academy in finals of the MAIS District 5-AA Tournament that she wanted another shot at the Lady Cougars in the postseason.

But perhaps the consolation game of the Class AA South State Tournament was not exactly what Hall had in mind. Especially after Brookhaven Academy, the second-ranked team in Class AA, was upset by host Simpson Academy in the semifinal round Friday night.

Terah Winborne made 14 free throws and finished with a game-high 38 points and Laura Beth Wright added 12 points to lead the Lady Cougars to a 68-42 win over the Lady Rebels to finish in third place.

Foul trouble by ACCS was a key factor in this game as Brandis White and Nikki Worthy both picked up four fouls in the first half and both fouled out early in the second half.

“We got in early foul trouble. I had a lot of players with four fouls. And just two of my starters had three (fouls at the end of the game). They made a ton of free throws,” Hall said.

The Lady Rebels put up a valiant effort against a very good Lady Cougars team, but the number fouls racked up in a hurry for ACCS. And Brookhaven Academy took advantage of that situation by going right at them and getting to the free-throw line.

The first quarter ended with Brookhaven Academy leading ACCS 20-10. The Lady Cougars then scored 26 points in the second quarter to 18 for the Lady Rebels for a commanding 46-28 halftime lead. With White and Worthy out of the game in the early stages of the third quarter, the Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Rebels 15-6 in that quarter for a 61-34 lead.

Tory Laird led ACCS with nine points and Valerie Forman scored seven points. White, Jessica Reynolds and Abby Givens had six points each for the Lady Rebels.

But despite the lopsided score, Hall said she was proud of how hard they played all the way to the final buzzer. Laird and White made the all-tournament team.

“I was so proud of the way my girls fought at the end. Like I always say, To God be the Glory, in victory and defeat. We never got our heads down. My girls battled hard,” Hall said. “There were just seconds left and I had girls flying after basketballs. I had one turn an ankle with seconds left trying to go after a (loose) ball.”

As the No. 4 seed from the South State Tournament, ACCS (28-7) will take on the North State champion and six-time defending state champion Leake Academy in the first round of the MAIS Class AA State Tournament at Kirk Academy in Grenada next Tuesday or Wednesday at a time to be determined. Leake Academy defeated North Delta Academy 60-31 to improve to 35-2 this season.

Bowling Green boys 46,

Trinity Episcopal 43

MENDENHALL — Austin Knight had not scored a single point for Bowling Green School for the entire ball game before draining a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Buccaneers a dramatic win over the Trinity Episcopal Saints Saturday night in the boys’ consolation game of the Class AA South State Tournament taking place at Simpson Academy.

Trinity was in prime position to win the game itself. The score was tied at 43-all and the Saints had the ball with about 1:45 to go was running down the clock to try to win the game themselves. But a Bowling Green player knocked the ball away from a Trinity player and a referee ruled the ball went off a Trinity and out of bounds with 7.1 seconds left, giving the Buccaneers the ball and the opportunity to win the game. And that’s what Knight did.

Mac McElveen led Bowling Green with a game-high 22 points. After the Saints scored the game’s first basket, he proceeded to score the next 14 points, 12 of them on four 4-pointers. The Buccaneers also got 11 points from Patrick Roublow.

Tip McKenzie led Trinity with 15 points while Trae McKenzie had 14 points and Tanner Cage added 11 points. Trae McKenzie also grabbed 11 rebounds while Cage had five steals and four rebounds.

Trinity Episcopal (23-11) will be the No. 4 seed out of South State and will take on the North State champion — the winner of the Canton Academy/Marshall Academy game — next Tuesday or Wednesday in the first round of the Class AA State Tournament at Kirk Academy.

The Rams were able to cut into the lead after they outscored Glenbrook 17-12 in the third quarter, but the Apaches held them to just nine points in the fourth quarter.
