Without prep work, area won’t survive

In Thomas Friedman’s 2005 book “The World is Flat,” the author explained how the globalization of the world’s economy was creating an increasingly more level playing field for all nations.

Some people may think it’s a crazy idea to suggest that domestic manufacturing — which was lost largely to cheaper foreign labor several years ago — may soon return.

But it makes sense to think it’s certainly a strong possibility as foreign labor costs increase, making domestic options more feasible for businesses.

Last week Concordia Parish Economic Development leaders said they were getting the parish prepared for that possibility. That process includes getting the parish’s industrial parks certified and ready to go so that if an opportunity arises, the parish will be ready to strike.

Such planning is a great investment in our community’s future.

During lean economic times such as the “low-tides” of the last few years, it’s critical to rebuild our economic boats so that we’re ready to sail when the tide returns.

We’ve made good progress with the formation of Natchez Inc. and early work on regionalism.

Natchez Inc. appears to have Natchez-Adams County’s economic development future headed in the right direction.

Concordia Parish’s economic development efforts also appear to be in prime “boat building” mode.

Regionalism efforts have leaders from both sides of the river starting to sit at the table together and talk about common interests.

Our community is poised for big things when the tide returns.
