GONZALES — The family members of a Natchez resident were the victims of a brutal attack by home invaders Saturday night that left two dead and one critically injured.
Natchez resident Teresa Godbold’s stepfather, Robert Irwin Marchand, 74, and brother, Douglas Dooley, 50, were killed by home invaders during an apparent robbery. Godbold’s mother, Shirley Marchand, 72, was left critically injured.
A $500,000 collection of gold coins is believed to be the reason for the home invasion. Ascension Parish Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the house late Saturday because relatives had been unable to reach the family by phone, and broke in when nobody answered, Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley said.
The deputies found Shirley still alive and the bodies of her son and husband.
The Advocate in Baton Rouge reported Monday night that a safe that matched the general description of the one taken from the house had been found in Livingston Parish.
Godbold’s husband, Lt. Craig Godbold, is a Natchez Police officer.
Several attempts to contact Lt. Godbold and Natchez Interim Police Chief Danny White on Monday were unsuccessful.
