NATCHEZ — An oversized tractor-trailer hauling heavy equipment through Natchez to Texas took a few wide turns into some city property causing damage on several city streets Monday.

Natchez Police Sgt. Ben Hewitt said the truck first took out traffic lights at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Street and tore down a street sign on Jefferson Street.

Hewitt said the truck driver missed a turn and traveled down Broadway Street attempting to turn around and head toward the Mississippi River bridge. Hewitt said the driver turned too wide, ran up on the sidewalk, hit a fire hydrant and took out two crape myrtle trees at the intersection of Broadway and Orleans Street.

Natchez City Engineer David Gardner said the truck damaged sidewalk that is part of the Natchez Trails Project and older sidewalk. The crape myrtles were also part of the Trails. Gardner said the hydrant will have to be replaced.

The truck also tore large limbs out of Gay and Albert Metcalfe’s live oak trees in front of The Parsonage, but Gay said the trees were not damaged significantly. She said city workers removed the limbs from the street.

Gardner said the trucking company, Scratch Brokerage Inc., based in Iuka, has insurance, and he said the city will seek payment for the damages.
