CENTREVILLE — More than a week after he died in an early morning blaze, the body of a Wilkinson County man is yet to be identified.

The Centreville and Woodville Volunteer Fire Departments responded to a fully engaged mobile home fire at 801 Mangum St. at 2:38 a.m. Feb. 15.

After the fire was extinguished, the body of a man burned beyond recognition was removed from the bedroom area of the home.

Because it could not be identified, the body had to be sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab for identification. The lab later determined that the deceased had died from smoke inhalation.

Wilkinson County Coroner Travis Sharp said Wednesday that he was waiting for DNA testing to come back before he could identify the body.

Dental records were not available, and he said he believes he knew who the victim was but could not be sure until the DNA tests came back.

“We are pretty sure who it is because of who lived there, and because nobody else lived there with him,” Sharp said.

The coroner declined to name who he believed the victim to be.

Results from the DNA tests should be back in approximately a week, Sharp said.
