LAUREN WOOD | THE NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT — Adams County Christian School's Jake Brumfield throws the ball during a double play as Cathedral School's Kyle Bradley slides into second during Thursday's game at the ACCS baseball field.

NATCHEZ — Christopher Perry and Jake Brumfield were a combined 5-for-6 at the plate with five RBIs between the two as Adams County Christian School beat in-town rival Cathedral High School 12-9 Thursday night.

The middle of the order for ACCS (5-2) proved to be key, and Johnny Smith, Tyler Brumfield and Brandon Ross also contributed to ACCS’s scoring outburst. And despite the tying run coming to the plate for Cathedral (1-3) in the top of the seventh inning, Rebels pitcher Chris Carrell was able to keep the Green Wave at bay for the save.

Two errors on defense was about the only negative Rebels head coach Hunter McKeivier could pinpoint in his team’s performance, he said.

“I’m excited to get the W against a quality team like Cathedral,” McKeivier said. “I thought we still played very sloppy defensively, (which is) something I told them we’ve really got to clean up if we want to be that championship-caliber team we all hope to be.”

Cathedral head coach Craig Beesely said he was pleased with his players not getting down on themselves and fighting until the end.

“I thought we swung the bat a lot better tonight than we did on Tuesday,” Beesley said, referring to his team’s 3-2 loss to ACCS earlier this week.

“They’re a pretty resilient group of kids. They came back, had some things go against them in the middle of the game, but they didn’t hang their heads and fought back. I’m proud of the way they came back after the way things happened earlier in the game.”

Cathedral scored two runs in the top of the first when Blake Martin singled in Caleb Upton and Austin Chauvin singled in Martin. But ACCS answered in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run by Jake Brumfield that drove in Christopher Perry.

Perry would give ACCS its first lead of the night in the bottom of the second when he hit a two-out single, driving in Tyler Buckles. Jake Brumfield then reached on a throwing error by Cathedral shortstop Daniel Huffines, scoring Christopher Perry and giving the Rebels a 4-2 lead.

The Green Wave’s Thomas Garrity made it 4-3 when he laced a single down the third base line in the top of the fourth, bringing home Kyle Bradley. Cathedral tied the game 4-4 when Chauvin drew a bases-loaded walk, sending home Garrity.

ACCS took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth when Carrell was driven in on a single by Jake Brumfield. Johnny Smith then followed up with a double, scoring Perry and courtesy runner Lester Wells. Tyler Brumfield then singled in Smith, making it 8-4 ACCS.

A passed ball in the top of the fifth scored Hayden Nunnery for Cathedral, but Perry drove in Carrell in the bottom half of the frame on a single. Perry then scored on a fielder’s choice by Tyler Brumfield, and Brandon Ross hit a two-run blast that scored Tyler Brumfield, giving the Rebels a 12-5 lead.

Cathedral added two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings, but Carrell forced Cathedral’s Ty Brown, who represented the tying run, to ground out, ending the game.

Cathedral actually out-hit ACCS 12-9, but the Green Wave left 10 men on base, something Beesley said his team needed to improve upon.

“We’re working on trying to put the ball in play, push it to the backside and get that run in, but the kids are struggling right now,” Beesley said. “I know it’s early in the year, and we’re going to get better. It’s just going to take time.”

Smith started for ACCS, going three and a third innings and yielding four runs, two earned, with one strikeout. Winning pitcher Tanner Martin pitched just two-thirds of an inning, giving up one earned run. Carrell threw the final three innings for ACCS, giving up four runs, three earned, and striking out three.

Chauvin pitched the first two innings for Cathedral, then Upton came in relief for Chauvin, pitching one and two-thirds innings and giving up four runs and striking out two. Upton took the loss for the Green Wave, and Garrity pitched the final two-and-a-third innings, yielding four runs on three hits with one strikeout.
