NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School completed a sweep of in-town rival Cathedral High School this past week with a 12-9 win at home Thursday night.
The win followed a 3-2 victory against the Green Wave at Chester Willis Field Tuesday night, and the Rebels’ game two win came down to timely hitting. While Cathedral left 10 men on base, the Rebels were able to drive in runs early in the game then hang on in the later innings to prevent Cathedral from rallying back.
ACCS head coach Hunter McKeivier said he has been pleased with his team’s approach at the plate during the early part of the season, something that demonstrated itself in Thursday’s game.
“We’ve been a little bit more patient, and we’ve gotten good aluminum on the ball,” McKeivier said. “We’ve got a lot of things going for us with the bat, but we’ve got to continue building on it and not just be happy with what we’ve done far.”
Jake Brumfield went 3-for-4 with a home run in Thursday’s game, and Christopher Perry was 2-for-2. Although Cathedral brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, ACCS pitcher Chris Carrell managed to keep the Green Wave from forcing a bottom of the seventh. He pitched the final three innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits with three strikeouts.
“Carrell will tell you first off that he struggled to find his stuff there the last inning,” McKeivier said. “He came in here when we were struggling to throw strikes there at the end, and he was able to get some innings. In the last inning, he struggled a little bit, but he was able to finish it out. He didn’t get rattled.”
ACCS (5-2) will play at Porter’s Chapel today.
Cathedral versus Natchez High
The week ended on a positive note for the Green Wave, with starter Blake Martin and reliever Hayden Nunnery combining to shut out the Bulldogs 13-0 in five innings Saturday afternoon.
Martin went the first two innings, giving up just two hits and one walk, and Nunnery pitched the final three innings, holding NHS to one hit and two walks.
After a rough start to the week, Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said it was nice to see his team rebound against the Bulldogs.
“It’s always good to get a win,” Beesley said. “We’re struggling right now, but we’re going to get better and hopefully game time and staying on the field is going to be the best thing for us.”
For NHS head coach Skip Golding, the loss was a case of one team being more mentally focused than the other team.
“It didn’t look as though we were quite ready to play, and I think they were,” Golding said. “They had a tough week with AC, and I think they wanted it a lot more than we did. We just have to try to keep improving.”
Although the Bulldogs have started slowly in recent years, only to come on strong when the conference schedule starts, Golding said his team’s youth might make that a more daunting task this season.
“We’re just so young — we’ve got one senior — and the last few years we’ve had some dominating pitching,” Golding said. “We don’t have a Javon (Washington) or any of those other guys like they’ve had the last few years. Hopefully we’ll do better (come region play).”
NHS (2-2) will host Terry High School on Tuesday, while Cathedral (2-3) will host Wilkinson County Christian Academy Friday.
