NATCHEZ — The Natchez High Bulldogs did not open up MHSAA Region 6-6A play the way they wanted to in a game that was originally scheduled for Tuesday night but was instead played on Monday night.
Terry High left-handed pitcher Wes Stringer had his way with Natchez High’s batters in pitching a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts that even amazed Natchez High head coach Skip Golding in leading the visiting Bulldogs to a 5-0 win at Chester Willis Field.
Only two Natchez High hitters reached base in the game and that was by way of walks.
“We couldn’t get a hit off him. He was throwing 85, 86 miles per hour,” Golding said.
Despite the loss, Golding had some positive things to say about his team’s performance.
“We only committed one error. We played good defense. We played 10 times better than we did Saturday against Cathedral,” Golding said. “We made contact, but they made every play. We hit the ball hard.”
Even though Dominique Salters was the losing pitcher, he pitched seven strong innings himself as he held Terry to just four hits.
“They had some timely hits. They’re well-coached and they hit well,” Golding said. “I give them all the credit. They’re the best high school team I’ve seen.
Natchez High (2-3, 0-1) next plays at Terry on Friday with the junior varsity game at 4 p.m. and the varsity game at 6 p.m.
Centreville Academy 5, Brookhaven Academy 2
BROOKHAVEN — After being held to just one run in the first six innings, the Centreville Academy Tigers took advantage of untimely miscues by Brookhaven Academy in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the Cougars Tuesday night.
Cougars starting pitcher Jacob Philipp more than held up in a pitchers’ duel with Tigers starting pitcher and Dandy Dozen selection Hunter Devall. Philipp ended up giving up four runs on three hits, struck out seven and walked only two in his 6 1/3 innings of work. Unfortunately, it would be all for naught.
After a base hit by Ethan Noland, Centreville’s second base hit in the top of the seventh, loaded the bases with one out, Austin Travis came in for Phillip Gage Chandler was hit by a pitch that brought in Randy Bell for the game-tying run. Colby Shaw walked to bring in Chance Humphreys with the go-ahead run.
Then Hunter Travis was hit by a pitch that brought in Chandler to make it a 4-2 game. After Devall struck out for the second out of the frame, Tyler Towls walked and that allowed Shaw to come in and give the Tigers a 5-2 lead.
Corey Gaulden pitched the bottom of the seventh and allowed no runs on one hit with two strikeouts. Devall gave up two runs on four hits with 12 strikeouts and no walks. He did give up Bubba Keene’s two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Centreville Academy (7-0) next plays at Amite School Center on Monday, March 12 with the JV game at 5 p.m. and varsity game at 7 p.m.
River Oaks 19,
Tensas Academy 7
ST. JOSEPH, La. — It took six innings, but the River Oaks School Mustangs were able to run-rule the Tensas Academy Chiefs Tuesday afternoon.
Despite being on the wrong end of the lopsided score, Tensas Academy got two home runs from Andy Hazel. Ryan Neuroth was the losing pitcher for the Chiefs (0-4.)
Tensas Academy will look to pick up its first win the season when it travels to Bastrop, La. to take on Prairie View Academy Thursday at 3 p.m.
Peabody 3, Block 0
ALEXANDRIA, La. — Peabody committed three errors, but Block was not able to take advantage of them and the Bears ended up being shut out by the Warhorses Tuesday night.
Peabody scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning and scored its final run in the bottom of the fourth. B. Lefleur pitched seven shutout innings and held Block to just three hits. And two of those were doubles by Vashawn Davis, who went 2-for-3. Taylor Perron suffered the loss despite a solid effort on the mound.
The Warhorses also had only three hits in the game — a double by Gaston and two singles from M. Taylor, who was 2-for-2.
