MONTEREY — Monterey High School took advantage of five walks, numerous passed balls and three errors by Block High School to defeat the Bears 7-3 Monday afternoon.
“They scored six runs on (seven) passed balls. When you have that many passed balls, you can’t give them free bases like that,” Block head coach Stevie McCarthy said. “We hit better, but the errors and the passed balls (hurt us).”
Monterey opened the scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning and then added two runs in the bottom of the second to go ahead 3-0.
Block tried to rally in the top of the third inning, but managed only one run before the Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-1 lead.
The Bears scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 6-3, but that would be as close as they would get. The Wolves scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth.
Hunter Frey was the winning pitcher for Monterey, allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk in four innings. Dillon Mayo suffered the loss, giving up seven runs (none of them earned runs) on one hit with five strikeouts and five walks.
Block (3-5) will play at Buckeye today, with the junior varsity team playing at 4 p.m. and the varsity team playing at 6 p.m. Monterey (5-3) plays host to Cathedral today, with the varsity game at 4 p.m.
