WCCA’s Fisher had versatile role

WOODVILLE — If you ask Terri Fisher, there isn’t one particular position she stuck with for the Wilkinson County High School girls basketball team this past season.

“I played every position but point guard,” the Lady Rams’ senior said. “I was primarily at power forward. I really would prefer being a shooting guard, since that’s where I’m best at, but our team needed a low post presence.”

Even with all of the shuffling around, Fisher still managed to average 22 points per game for the Lady Rams, which made it to the first round of the South State tournament and were runners-up in the MAIS District 6-A tournament. Fisher’s offensive output made her a selection for the All-District squad.

WCCA head coach Brandi McDaniel said Fisher was simply the best option for her team in the post, and Fisher was willing to make the adjustment.

“She’s not really tall, but she’s not really short,” McDaniel said. “She’s somewhere in the middle. She’s a strong girl, which allowed me to put her down low, but she can also shoot from the outside. It’s helpful for us, because it created mismatches for the defense.”

McDaniel also said the main objective was to get Fisher the ball as much as possible.

“She’s a scorer, an offensive player, and that’s her strong suit,” McDaniel said. “I looked at what was the best option for us to score the most points, and that was to give her the ball.”

Fisher said her style of play allowed her to go to the free throw line quite a bit, which is what she liked about being a post player.

“They just give it to me and tell me to post up, and try to get fouled,” Fisher said. “I’m a pretty good foul shooter. I practice at home, and I guess that just makes me better at it.”

Although she enjoyed playing inside, Fisher admitted that her outside game suffered a bit.

“I usually drive to the basket,” Fisher said. “I used to be really good (from beyond the arc), but I started driving a lot, and I lost my shot. Prior to this year, I was stronger behind the three-point line.”

Fisher said she was happy her team did so well her senior year, and she said her teammates’ willingness to work together made the difference.

“I think we had a way better team last year, but we didn’t go as far,” Fisher said. “At the end of this year, we started playing team ball, and we never could do that last year. Things came together for us.”

Fisher also said she enjoyed averaging 22 points a game, and she hopes someone can take her place and be the go-to girl on offense next season.

“It feels good, because this is my senior year, and I have to leave after this year,” Fisher said. “I just hope someone else can step up.”

Fisher said she will attend Southern Mississippi and major in nursing. She is the daughter of Shirley Hollins and Ronnie Fisher.
