Block beats Vidalia in softball

JENA, La. — Kayla Smith pitched seven solid innings for Block and the Lady Bears took advantage of seven Vidalia errors in a 9-4 win over the Lady Vikings Saturday morning at the Jena Tournament.
Both teams finished with nine hits, but Vidalia’s miscues in the field as well as wild pitches by losing pitcher Laura Perilloux and Taylor Rogers proved to be very costly.
Perilloux allowed eight runs (three earned) on eight hits and walked one while striking out three batters in four innings. Rogers gave up just one run on one hit but also four walks and struck out one in two innings.
Smith went the distance for Block as she allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits and struck out eight batters. This after a shutting out the Lady Patriots before having a disappointing outing against Jena in an 11-3 loss to the Lady Giants Friday night.
Block (13-4) returns to LHSAA District 4-1A action on Monday when they play host to St. Mary’s at 4 p.m.
Monterey takes two at Grace Christian Tournament
ALEXANDRIA, La. — The Monterey Lady Wolves ended up going undefeated at the Grace Christian Softball Tournament after winning both of the their games Saturday at the Cabrini Sports Complex.
In its first game of the day, Monterey 10-run-ruled the Georgetown Lady Bulldogs 18-7 in five innings Saturday morning. Paige Bryan was the winning pitcher for Monterey as she allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and no walks in three innings.
After Ellen Bairnsfather gave up five runs on just two hits over the final two innings of the game against Georgetown, she pitched her third no-hitter this week in a 6-0 win over the Lafayette Christian Academy Lady Knights Saturday afternoon.
Bairnsfather went the distance for Monterey with four strikeouts and one walk. Even though the Lady Wolves had three errors, the Lady Knights were not able to take advantage of them.
Monterey (8-7) hosts Pineville at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and will start with the varsity game to be followed by the JV game.
Vidalia 10, Franklin Parish 4
JENA, La. — Katlyn Temple led Vidalia’s offense by going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in while Laura Perilloux scattered 10 hits and got plenty of help from her teammates as the Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Patriots Saturday afternoon at the Jena Tournament.
Vidalia scored two runs each in the top of the first, third and fifth innings en route to a 6-2 advantage. The Lady Vikings put the game away with four runs in the top of the seventh, including a two-run single by No. 9 hitter Emily Meyers.
Vidalia (11-8) hosts Avoyelles in LHSAA District 3-3A action on beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The junior varsity game starts first with the varsity game to follow.
Franklin County goes 1-3 at Clarkdale Spring Fling Tournament
MERIDIAN — The Franklin County Lady Bulldogs split a pair of games Saturday at the Clarkdale Spring Fling Tournament after losing both of their games on Friday.
Franklin County rallied from an early 4-0 deficit by scoring eight consecutive runs to defeat the Germantown Lady Mavericks 8-5. Latorya Griffin was the winning pitcher as she allowed five runs (two earned) on eight hits, struck out two and walked three in six innings.
The D’Iberville Lady Warriors provided Franklin County with much tougher competition and used a nine-run rally in the bottom of the third inning to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 12-4 lead and they would go on to win the game 15-4 in four innings.
On Friday, Franklin County lost to the Quitman Lady Panthers 7-3 despite a two-run home run by Griffin in the first inning and then it got hammered by the West Lauderdale Lady Knights 16-3 in four innings.
The Lady Bulldogs will play at McComb on Tuesday with the JV game at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m.
