NATCHEZ — Ginny Daggett had a strong day on the mound and at the plate for Cathedral High School, and it proved to be too much to overcome for the Natchez High School softball team.

Daggett pitched three innings of no-hit ball, yielding just one walk, as the Lady Green Wave blanked the Lady Bulldogs 18-0 Tuesday afternoon.

Cathedral tallied just five hits in the game, relying mostly on walks and defensive miscues to bring home runners. Lady Green Wave head coach Gary Blackwell said he was pleased with his players’ approach at the plate.

“We came out and were patient at the plate and did what we had to do,” Blackwell said. “Their pitcher was having a rough time, so we walked when we had to and got a couple of good hits.”

NHS starter Michaela Hutchins was charged with the loss, giving up 15 runs on three hits in the first inning. Hutchins was unable to record an out, and NHS head coach Sheronda Welch eventually brought seventh grader Jasmine Ivory in for relief.

“I guess they got excited about our victory (last) Tuesday against Vidalia and just didn’t show up at this game,” Welch said. “They broke down mentally, didn’t pull together as a team and didn’t play team ball.”

Cathedral tallied 15 runs in the first inning before Ivory was able to record three outs. The offensive explosion included a three-run home run by Daggett, who finished 2-for-2 at the plate. Beth Fortenbery went 2-for-3.

The second inning was much more tempered for Cathedral, as the Lady Green Wave only scored three runs that inning. After a shutout top of the third, the game was called due to the 15-runs-after-three mercy rule.

Despite being on the wrong end of a blowout, Welch said she was happy with the job Ivory did in helping to limit the damage.

“Jasmine is an all-around good player,” Welch said. “No matter what, we can always depend on Jasmine to pull us through. She does a really good job on the field and off the field.”

With the win, Cathedral (6-4-1) turns its attention to West Lincoln, who the Lady Green Wave will play on the road Thursday.

“It’s our first district game, and I was hoping we’d have a good game here to get ready for West Lincoln,” Blackwell said. “This was a good win — of course, any win is a good win.”

NHS (2-7) will host Warren Central Friday.
