NATCHEZ — The Natchez High School baseball team won some small battles in its game Friday night against Brandon High School, but the visitors from Brandon had too much firepower for Natchez to come close to winning the war.

Brandon pounded out 12 hits, including six extra-base hits, and scored 14 runs in the four-inning contest.

Natchez scored a run on two hits in the first inning and had a rally going in the third inning before getting a runner thrown out at home plate and leaving the bases loaded. Natchez managed six hits in the game but left five runners on base in the 14-1 loss.

Natchez head coach Skip Golding said he thought his team was able to put some things together offensively, but overall he did not like what he saw Friday night.

“I am disappointed in the effort,” he said. “(Brandon) is a better baseball team than us, but the effort given is not what I expected.”

Brandon was able to start its scoring spree in the first inning with two runs on three hits, including a two-RBI single by Tyler Rachel.

Natchez answered with its only run of the game in the bottom of the inning when Davion Ward drove in Derrian Johnson with a single. Johnson reached on a two-out single.

Brandon stretched its lead to 6-1 in the second inning. Austin Puckett led of the inning with a solo home run. Tyler Cox also added a two-RBI double in the inning. Cox finished the night 3-3 with three doubles.

Brandon scored two more runs in the top of the third inning for a seven-run lead.

Natchez had its best scoring opportunity of the game in the third inning when Christian Day led off the inning with a single. Two batters later Johnson doubled to the centerfield fence with Day on second base, but Brandon was able to get the ball to home plate before Day could reach home safely.

Ward followed Johnson’s double with a single, and Lamarcus Singleton walked to load the bases. But Brandon pitcher Elijah Parker was able to strike out Lee Jackson to end the threat.

Brandon added six runs in the top of the fourth inning with the big hit coming off the bat of Casey Echols. Echols smashed a three-RBI triple down the right field line to give Brandon a 13-1 lead.

The game was called after the bottom of the inning with Brandon leading 14-1.

Johnson finished the game 2-2 with a double for Natchez, and Ward also went 2-2. Johnson took the loss for Natchez.

Natchez will face Lanier in a double-header today, and Golding said he just hopes the Bulldogs will have enough pitching left to compete in both games.

The loss dropped Natchez to 2-5 on the season and 0-3 in MHSAA Region 6-6A.
