LAUREN WOOD/THE NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT — Centreville Academy’s Cliff Hurst, right, smiles with teammate Gage Chandler, left, after hitting a home run during Saturday’s game against Brookhaven Academy at the Centreville baseball field. Hurst had a great week for the Tigers, despite his team’s first loss of the season Saturday.

CENTREVILLE — Cliff Hurst’s towering home run that just cleared the left-field fence in Centreville’s game against Brookhaven Academy Saturday gave the Tigers a brief one-run lead.

And although the Tigers would eventually fall 4-3 to Brookhaven for their first loss of the season, Hurst’s homer capped off a monster week for the Centreville slugger.

Hurst belted four home runs last week, including a two home run performance against Bowling Green Tuesday, in which the senior drove in a total of nine runs.

Hurst also won a game on the mound for the Tigers Friday against Bowling Green. He allowed just one hit and struck out 11 batters in the game.

The Tigers’ Randy Bell had a big week as well, as he piled up three multi-hit games.

Hurst and Bell led Centreville to a 4-1 record last week.

“(Hurst and Bell) are definitely leaders on this team for us,” Centreville head coach Jason Horne said.

Centreville (14-1) will try to rebound from Saturday’s loss Tuesday versus Central Private.

ACCS

Chris Carrell was the catalyst for Adams County Christian School’s victory over Wilkinson County Christian Academy Monday night.

Carrell had two of the team’s six hits, including a double and a home run.

Carrell has been a key piece to ACCS’s offensive puzzle this season, head coach Hunter McKeivier said.

“He has been pretty clutch,” McKeivier said. “He’s kind of been the cornerstone of what we’ve been able to do so far. He’s our leadoff guy, and he’s getting on base and allowing our three, four and five hitters to get RBIs to get us victories.”

Carrell is a versatile player for the Rebels. McKeivier said he pitched well in ACCS’s 5-4 loss to Brookhaven, in which the Rebel defense gave up six errors.

Carrell has also played a consistent shortstop for ACCS all season, McKeivier said.

“He’s kind of meticulous with defense,” McKeivier said. “Every day he’s out taking ground balls and trying to get better.”

ACCS went 2-1 last week with wins over WCCA and Brookhaven, and Friday’s loss to Brookhaven. The Rebels (11-4-1) will travel to face WCCA tonight.

Trinity

The Trinity Episcopal baseball team piled up 15 hits in its lone win last week, and several players showed their ability to put up big offensive nights.

Andrew Moroney led the way for the Saints going 3-5 with two doubles in the 14-8 victory over Riverfield Thursday night.

Jared Hedrick and Sky Logan also had three-hit performances in the game, while Jake Winston and Quinton Logan both had two hits. One of Winston’s was a solo home run.

But the Saints were unable to score enough runs to top Centreville or Madison-Ridgeland Academy last week and dropped two of three contests.

Trinity (3-4) will host Brookhaven Tuesday night.

Cathedral

The Cathedral School baseball team went 1-3 last week with a win over West Lincoln.

Pitcher Blake Martin shined in the Green Wave’s victory over West Lincoln Tuesday. Martin went the full seven innings allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out eight batters to give Cathedral the 1-0 win.

Cathedral (5-6) will host Bogue Chitto Tuesday night.
