VICKSBURG — After being tagged for three runs in the bottom of the first inning, Cathedral’s Mollie Devening responded in a big way in helping the Lady Green Wave rally for a 13-6 win over the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes Tuesday afternoon in MHSAA Region 7-1A action.

Over the next five innings, Devening limited St. Aloysius to just one run, which allowed Cathedral to come back from an early 3-1 deficit.

The Lady Green Wave scored three runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead for good at 4-3. They added another run an inning later to go ahead 5-3. The Lady Flashes scored once in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 5-4 game, but that would be as close as they would get to retaking the lead.

“We came out a little sluggish at the beginning. We just weren’t hitting the ball well tonight,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said. “It was just kind of a battle right until the last inning. Took us till the seventh inning to get cranked up.”

The Lady Green Wave scored one run in the top of the fifth inning for a 6-4 lead before scoring seven times in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach at 13-4.

Devening helped her own cause by going 3-for-4 with a double. Ginny Daggett was 2-for-4 with a triple and McKenzie Milligan went 3-for-5 to lead Cathedral’s 14-hit attack.

The Lady Flashes tried to put a scare in the visitors by scoring two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Devening closed the door on that comeback attempt.

“St. Al had the bases loaded and scored a pair of two-out runs. We finally closed it out,” Blackwell said. “We didn’t have the emotion we’ve been having lately.”

Devening went the distance and allowed six runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks to go with six strikeouts.

Cathedral (9-4-1, 2-0) hosts Bogue Chitto on Thursday with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 6 p.m.
