Land problem needs true attention

No matter how badly we want to self-soothe, there’s simply no such thing as a good problem.
So even though it’s good that Natchez Inc. has found an industry that wants to occupy the last available big chunk of industrial real estate owned by the county, there’s bad news.
After KiOR moves onto the former Belwood Country Club property, Natchez Inc. won’t have any major properties to hawk.
Like many things, the current situation is the result of years of inaction and inattention.
The county has known for the better part of a decade that it needed to find more industrial land to offer up to prospects. Yet, nothing has happened.
Natchez Inc. has lots of Is to dot and Ts to cross on the recent deals it has landed, we know, but soon — very soon — the economic development arm is going to have to go into full land-finding-mode.
We hope city and county leaders will be ready and willing to assist. Further, we hope private landowners will realize that inking a deal with the county or Natchez Inc. is also a gift to the future of our community as a whole.
A lack of land is not a good problem. It is a problem that needs immediate and thorough attention now and forever if we hope the next 10 years will be better than the last.
