NATCHEZ — Ginny Daggett hit two home runs, one of them a three-run shot during an 11-run third inning, as the Cathedral Lady Green Wave defeated the West Lincoln Lady Bears 17-4 in four innings Tuesday afternoon to stay undefeated in MHSAA Region 7-1A.
But it wasn’t just Daggett who came through for Cathedral in this game. The bottom of the lineup also stepped up in a big way to help the Lady Green Wave pull away from upset-minded West Lincoln.
“We got hits from some players who have been struggling in the past. MacKenzie Watts and Shannon Mire came alive tonight with some timely hits in the third inning. Tori Edwards was 2-for-2,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said. “Everybody was putting the bat on the ball.”
The Lady Green Wave jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before the Lady Bears rallied for four runs in the top of the second inning, and it looked like a back-and-forth ball game was under way. As it turned out, that would not be the case.
“We got those five runs in the first inning. The second inning we kind of fell apart. We had a couple of errors. After that we stepped it up,” Blackwell said.
Cathedral scored one run in the bottom of the second inning for a 6-4 lead before blowing the game wide open in the bottom of the third. Daggett ended up going 2-for-3 and Kimble Deveing was 2-for-4. Edwards had a double among her two hits.
“We came out hitting the ball. The third inning was just timely hits. Overall, it was just a good game,” Blackwell said.
Mollie Devening was the winning pitcher as she allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Cathedral (13-4-1, 5-0) plays at Bogue Chitto on Thursday with the Region 7-1A championship on the line for both teams. Bogue Chitto’s only loss in region play is to Cathedral. The junior varsity game will start at 5 p.m. and will be followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m.
Monterey 14, Harrisonburg 2
HARRISONBURG, La. — Jody Duncan had her best game of the season at the plate on Tuesday afternoon as she went 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and three runs batted in as the Monterey Lady Wolves routed the Harrisonburg Lady Bulldogs.
Duncan’s performance was part of a 19-hit attack in which seven Monterey players had a least two hits. Karlee Woodruff went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Ashley Wilson was 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs. Ashley Blake and Bailey New each were 2-for-5 with one RBI. Paige Bryan and Baler Smith also had two hits each.
The Lady Wolves didn’t score until the top of the third inning, when they broke open a scoreless game with six runs. They added three more runs an inning later, but Harrisonburg got a 2-run double from Bines in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 9-2.
Monterey had a chance to 10-run-rule Harrisonburg if it had scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Instead, the Lady Wolves managed just two runs for an 11-2 lead. They didn’t score again until the top of the seventh when they plated three runs.
Ellen Bairnsfather got the win for Monterey as she allowed two runs on three hits, struck out nine and hit two batters. Next up for Monterey (14-12) will be the LHSAA Class B Playoffs.
