Won’t you be our student, neighbor?

Editor’s note: The original version of this editorial incorrectly said community colleges were included in the legislation. They were not. We regret the error and have corrected the information below.
Far be it from us to accuse Gov. Phil Bryant or the Mississippi Legislature from being neighborly.
Just like any good Southerner worth his weight in grits, Mississippi’s leaders recently made a change that will show a little kindness to our neighbors.
Bryant recently signed into law a bill that aims to give the state’s universities the flexibility to waive out-of-state tuition requirements.
We’ve long lobbied for the ability of our local university and community college to be able to do that. We still hope the tuition change will one day include community colleges.
For communities such as ours, it just seems silly to consider someone just a few miles away as a foreigner. Anyone who spends any time in the Miss-Lou realizes that it’s not uncommon to live in one state, work in another and travel back and forth a couple of times each day.
We’re all one community here, but for years, a person with a Louisiana address might as well have been living in California, at least as far as higher education admissions offices were concerned.
Whether or not the leadership at Alcorn State University ultimately decides to make a case for waiving the fees is not clear.
But we’re happy they at least have the ability now to treat all Miss-Lou residents fairly.
