NATCHEZ — A Natchez couple has been arrested on charges of child abuse.

Erica Nicole Bumgarner, 23, 12 Alexander Road, and Daniel Justin Bumgarner, 30, of 301 McNeely Road, were arrested this week on charges of child abuse-battery causing serious bodily harm. Daniel Bumgarner is charged with two counts, while Erica Bumgarner is charged with one count.

Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said the couple was arrested after a relative of the victim — a 5-year-old child — reported the child had been abused.

Erica Bumgarner is mother of the victim, Mayfield said.

The relative brought in photos to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office showing severe markings, bruises and welts, on the child’s legs, Mayfield said.

The sheriff said the ACSO worked in conjunction with the Department of Human Services and the Adams County Youth Court. The investigation is ongoing, he said.

Youth Court Judge John Hudson has issued a court order prohibiting the Bumgarners from having any contact with the child until the matter is resolved.

Erica Bumgarner has been released on a $10,000 bond. Daniel Bumgarner is currently detained on a $50,000 bond.
