NATCHEZ — A Natchez man previously accused of murder was charged Thursday with attempting to escape from the Natchez City Jail after being apprehended for another charge.

Natchez Lt. Craig Godbold said Kelvin L. Mitchell, 31, 642 Maple St., was charged with contempt of court for default in payment for a trespassing charge. Godbold said Mitchell attempted to escape from a detention officer Thursday but was apprehended before leaving jail property.

Mitchell was charged with grand larceny in October 2011 after being caught burglarizing Arlington by a Natchez police officer. The charge was later reduced to trespassing.

Mitchell was charged in 2007 for the shooting death of Timothy O’Neal, 19, but, Godbold said, a grand jury later determined there was not enough evidence to indict Mitchell.
